Sweet pic! Did your dog actually find it or did you just have him pose for the photo?

LAST EDITED ON Apr-11-09 AT 11:14AM (MST)[p]NV_4LIFE, great lookin' dog and great bone! Have you worked on training your dog to find antlers or is he just doing it on his owne?
Are you in the Elko area? fatrooster.

I love posts like this- love the unique improvisations- especially the idea of a "pack dog". I went out to "introduce" a couple of young novices to shed hunting, I even parted with a couple of forky sheds that I "planted" in plain view of the two boys... they were more content to swap huntin' stories; I had to almost direct them to the planted antlers. Then, after our hike, I went to a different location:"the Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away" in reverse- I was able to find two brown forks to replace the planted white ones. And from the size of them, the pack dog w/harness would've worked!! Happy continued successes, everyone!!

thanks fatrooster. I could try and claim that I trained him, but he kind of just caught on to what we were always looking for. When he was a pup, I took him all the time, and pretty soon he started finding small ones. Now, he finds more than me! And obviously, bigger ones. He mainly finds white ones. I think he associates them by the color, because he steps right over brown ones all the time. And yeah, im in Elko, but just for work.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-11-09 AT 10:00PM (MST)[p]Sounds like a smart dog. I wonder how good he would have been with training.
I've been training a lab to hunt sheds and its going pretty good. On our last trip out she found 11 that I never saw. My shed days are coming to a screaching halt though because I will be starting a month long shut down at the gold mine in Carlin.
Goodluck to you and your dog and I hope you find lots of sheds. If you ever want to know more about training dogs to shed hunt I will be glad to talk about it.
Crazymaez, my wife has a Pomeranian and your picture has given me an idea. Maybe if I strapped a T-bone steak to his back I could troll for Mountain Lions. Ha ha just joking. But maybe he could carry some sheds. fatrooster.
