We try and put the hurt on the coyotes early and then right towards the end of season the fox will start showing up. It always seems to work that way. Too many coyotes around and we won’t see the fox !
 
That's our problem, too many coyotes and mange. Years ago there were lots of fox here. I used to coyote hunt with a man who would track up 2 or 3 fox a day with fresh snow but that was back in the 50s and 60s. I haven't called in a fox in over 20 years.
 
We put the hurt on them every year as soon as we get the first skiff of snow ! The dogs will run coyote or fox , but most the fox are spotted and walked out on. Keeps it interesting !
 
Buddy and I have hammered 30++ coyotes this season. Seems pretty good until seeing the "big boy's" numbers but we still have a ball doing our little part.
Last time out we got 9 and I dropped a double..... but on the same trip I had 3 come in and I only got 1 so I have to stay humble or the yotes will do it for me. Tricky lil buggers!

I gotta get a wolf or two this year, love those pics. This is the first year ive taken the plunge and bought idaho licenses. Ive been pretty successful calling lions and bears, so i think i have a halfway decent chance of pulling the wolf thing off if i really put in the time and effort. I have no problem getting on wolves here at home where im not allowed to shoot them.
 
That should thin them a bit. Very Nice. How was the fur prices in your neck of the woods.
 
i have not seen a coyote or red fox in a long while. i don't think there's any left in northern Utah. but when getting Christmas trees in the caribou-targee national forest on the way to Montpelier i saw a lot of sigh
 
High was $85, low was $25, and average was $39. Lower than before covid. They are using an online auction vs a live auction and that seems to have depressed prices.
 
Pretty sure Covid hurt the fur prices last winter.
a bunch trappers just put them raw skinned in a chest freezer hoping prices go up this winter.

I don’t. But I’m not opposed to it. With buyers wanting it stretched and dried then paying 30 bucks it just isn’t worth my time. If I could find one who buys green fur I’d probably do it . I skin big ones or cool colors and dry them out for the garage. Other then that I strip there tails and pin them up. Clean up skulls on bigger or really old ones

Called rocky mtn fur couple yrs ago to see it they buy fur in the round. They said their skinner quit. So I'm in the same boat the cost in time of skinning and stretching isn't worth it. Doing someones job for them doesn't sound appealling when you're getting a fraction of what they get at auction.

You are smoking them J, would love to talk tactics with guys who have been doing it longer than me. Are you varying your prey calls or pick one and stick with it? Do you use coyote vocals or just during the coyote breeding season? Im running a fox pro jackhammer at the moment, so I have a decent amount of sounds
 
I’ve got a couple of go to sounds I use. Basically my call has 500 sounds and I use like 10 of them. But it’s cool to have a variety. I’ll run my go too’s until I go 3 or 4 stands with no action then I’ll switch it up. I use vocals all year but more late into winter. Pup works 12 months a year. I rarely ever start with a howl. I’ll howl after a couple prey sequences if I think it will sound right, like another coyote came up check it out. That can really trigger a cautious dog to have to come take a look

Thought I would share this one. This is as close to bit as I've ever been when calling. ***** came in on a dead run. By the time I swung my old .222 she was real close. I pulled trigger right when she cut right and caught her in the flank. Momentum carried her through the mesquite I was using for cover. She popped up spinning about 6 feet away biting everything around her. Cycled a round and put her down before she could get to my foot. Stood up and took that pic.
 
I might have saved the coat, but she had dangled with a skunk recently. The smell was so strong, I questioned even touching her. I've heard the pelt prices are forecasted to be crap this year - hopefully this isn't the case.
 
Starting to be in mating pairs this time of year. Howls work really well now if you see coyotes marking territory.
