Passing the Time?

Anyone else out there still shed hunting to pass the time between the seasons? I am headed out tomorrow to look for some sheds and do a little scouting for my buck. I have found a few elk sheds in the area I am going to be deer hunting so I thought it would be a good way to pass the time if I am not seeing any deer....and to learn the country a little more....maybe even get a few pics of the bulls I seen in the area a few weeks ago....Hopefully tomorrow will be a good day!

Got back this afternoon from scouting/shed hunting....seen alot of deer but no shooter bucks. I ended up finding a nice little 5 point elk shed and a small 4x4 elk set and a spike elk shed. My dad found a nice 6 point elk shed that is off about a 300" bull....very similar to the set we found in the same area last year about this same time of year....couldnt find the mate to this one though!
We also seen 8 cows and a 6xeyeguard bull.....the bull had busted one side off to the eyeguard fighting it looked like....my dad had a diaphram call and we were messing around and got him to about 30 yards....I wasnt in the best position when he came in....so the pictures that I took are from about the time he smelled us and started running....they should turn out alright I think though.
My hopes were high for the area to produce a big buck for me this year but I think I am going to hunt a different area since all we seen were small bucks and we covered about 7 miles today....glassing alot more country than we have in the past couple of years. So maybe next year for that area!?
I will get pics posted as soon as I get them developed!

YB,

ahhhh, to be young and have alot of time to myself again...no, i haven't had any free time to spend looking for sheds, or even to archery hunt big bulls lately. too much other chit to do!

but, pheasants/antelope seasons open this weekend so you can guess what i'll be doing!

keep up the good work picking up those off-season sheds. it sounds to me like the place you were hoping to spot a good buck over the weekend just might produce a good buck during a mid-november rut hunt if that's an option in your area.

good luck!

I think the area would be awesome during the rut! Too bad they only give out like 25 or 50 tags for the late season in the unit! It would be especially nice since it would be alot colder out and if I ended up shooting something it wouldnt spoil before I had the chance to get the whole thing out....with it being in the high 70's on Sunday and for the past week it would be tough to bring myself to pretty much waste an animal....being off the road about 3 miles like we were!

I am always looking for sheds. yesterday I went over 300 for the year. Number 292 was the best antler of the year, a 74 3/8 inch five point whitetail antler. went looking twice for the match but have yet to find it.

I always keep an eye out for antlers. Sure are a lot easier to spot this time of the year after they start turning white!!! Soak 'em in water to make up for what they lost in color!!! Joking.

It's amazing how many of them remain unfound after the spring time "gold rush!"
