LAST EDITED ON Mar-28-10 AT 07:39PM (MST)[p]any suggestions for non res OTC Elk meat hunt, just looking to fill the freezer in 2010. Thanks any info appreciated.

Do you have a muzzleloader? if so try bear river unit. cow hunt only but good meat.

Kind of a different question here.

Idaho is not set up on OTC tags for a "MEAT" hunt. Most of the zones have a and b tags. the b tags are in general for gun hunting out of the peak times for success. the a tags are for better times of the year, but you will be restrictd in weapons (in general). The a tags are usually better for just getting one on the ground...

You did not say if you have archery and or muzzle loader ability. In fact you did not give us much to go on as far as your physical ability, elk killing ability (past experience. How much money you got to spend. How did you plan to hunt? you got a place to stay or are you just going to park the truck and head out into the wilderness?

here is another option to consider.

find your elk zone that you want to hunt, decide which tag A or "B. Buy it! I mean it is still hunting, not going to the supermarket... If nothing else find the units with the highest number of cows harvested last year or most total elk killed in it and buy that one...

In May put in for a Cow tag in the controlled hunt drawings. You will likely be able to then hunt with a gun in a late season. = increace in chance of success. If you draw, great, if not go hunt your tag.

Also Idaho has a few "X"'tra elk tags areas. They are that for a reason... lots of elk in farm fields. = farmers wanting sombody to come kill the elk out of there winter wheat field.

good luck.
