Just a heads up: On November 13th, we'll be performing some updates on the website. You might experience some unresponsive pages, though we’re hoping for minimal disruption. Thanks for your understanding!
I was in eastern oregon and found an area that had a few hundred wintering elk and mule deer. When would be a good time to start looking for sheds? (my first time) The local trooper said that people start in March... Thanks for the input!
Well, the deer are good anytime now, but if its cold and snowy good luck finding the horns and you'll also be disturbing the critters on their winter range, something we shouldn't do. You dont want to start looking for elk sheds till about April, by then most the good bulls will be shed!
The muleys are not droppin yet. I would say march but if you are lookin in a busy area it would be a good idea to get a head start. I refer to the theory that sheds can be found 365 days a year. Good luck and if you ever need a trained eye shoot me a pm, I can spot a fresh bone from up to almost a mile away and would gladly help you out with the spotting. You wouldnt have to worry about me taking any bones, I have my own honey holes on some of my friends private ground. If you need any help or have questions about an area just let me know, I would be glad to help!!!
The muleys will start dropping in the next couple weeks, but it's best to wait until March if you can.
The elk will start following the snowline back up the mountain. My hunting partner lives in John Day and finds elk sheds in April and May at 6500' to 7000'.
Hear in Northwest Wyoming the deer sheds start dropping about the last week in feb, or the beginning of March, the elk don't start dropping till the last weekend in march beginning of april. Try and locate where the bucks are hanging out. The bull elk will not be with the cows but should be in an area somewhat close to where the cows are located. Scouting can help alot, if you have the time to.
