How long to you think a mature elk will carry a single antler? I always see elk and deer with singles, but I dont camp on them so I dont know how long they usually last until they drop the other side. I'm sure it varies, but do any of you guys have an oppinion?

LAST EDITED ON Mar-31-06 AT 10:15AM (MST)[p]im curious about that to..when i went out last week i watched a 350 class bull carry one side for hours, then he managed to slip away from me..hopefully i can find it later...i think some drop close while others still carry a whole another mile away, i guess it depends where he is heading.

I think it varies from bull to bull, but I don't think they'll carry the other side around as long as some deer do. We've matched up sets from 350+ bulls that were over 2 miles apart...(obviously traveling bulls).

Last year I found a 360 class 7 point elk antler and a buddy of mine found the other side 2.3 miles away according to his GPS. It was in fairly flat country.

a day or two but most will drop them with-in a 24 hour period, so it depends on how far they travel in that 24 hour period, I know that we use to pick alot of horn up along the fence line coming from sage into the fields, I think the jaring on jumping the fence would knock them loose.

I just gave up on a 7 pt bull who packed one side for 13 days the last I saw him. . . I had to leave for two weeks and have not come across since i got back, but the last day I saw him he had packed on side (360-370) 7pt bull, for 13 days!!!!!!!!

I have not found either side! LOL!

I was gone for two weeks and have not been back to check on the elk yet. I'm sure he's lost it by now, but likely hood of finding both sides is about nill. I likely will find the one side, but since he packed it for at least two weeks, and the first time I saw him he had only one side. When I find it, or both, I'll photograph them.
