Once in a lifetime Moose and Sheep change question

If HB0043 makes it all the way, what will happen to those who have already drawn a Moose or Sheep tags? This would include two categories of people. First those who now have points again and those who are on their waiting period. I am currently on my moose waiting period, but would have done things different if I had know it was going to retro me to once in a lifetime. It seems this bill is lacking on those details.

Anyone have the inside scoop?

Hopefully Buzz chimes in.
I thought if you had PP , you were still in but anyone in the waiting period was not.
Someone in the know will clarify I hope.

I'm against the bill then. I can put in again next year. I put in for a lesser unit and shot a lesser bull knowing it wasn't once in a lifetime. Now they change the rules mid game.

Well you’re a little late to the party to voice your opinion but get after it.

That was a pretty sweet plan you had there. Accumulate PP's for 20 some odd years. Dump those points at around age 40 on a crappy unit. Shoot a bull you are not happy with so that you could get a crack at a monster at around age 100.

Then they go and change the rules so that a person that has never taken a bull can slightly improve his odds of drawing. Those bastards!

BTW, for you its not mid game, its end of the game. For many others the game is just starting or not started at all.

I had 4 points and pulled a random. That unit was a guaranteed with 12 points in 2018.

Now in Utah I have 21 points, but as a non resident of Utah will never draw in that state.

Wow! You honestly thought you would draw again and a better area?

The bill has nothing to do with the details in regulation. Regulations come after the bill and you can tell your sob story to the G&F Commissioners instead of here on MM.

No, draw the same area and shoot a bigger bull. When I'm retired in 30 years I will be able to hunt the entire season. I'm not too worried, but my co worker that's on his sheep waiting period is not happy with the once in a lifetime change.

They just need to wait one more year then I will have a point and can still apply for moose.

???????

I'm happy with my moose, I just would have shot a bigger one if it was once in a lifetime.

Founder killed both the bucks I was after. Last year and the year before. But I don't have 30 days a year to scout and 20 to hunt. That buck he killed last year was a smart old buck. I hunted him 5 days in 2020 and saw him once for about 5 seconds. I chose not to hunt him in 2021, but on day 3 almost decide to go looking for him. I have a different hunting style than Founder. I get into the bucks layer and make noise and cover lots of ground. If I had gone after that buck Founder never would have gotten him. I would of had the buck on high alert. Plus I knew right were he could be found, I have pictures of him from 2020 when he was out of velvet.

Well your not the only one in that boat. Moose, sheep, goat, bison tags should never be taken for granted when they come your way. In the last 5 yrs there was around 1300 resident moose licenses and 720 resident sheep licenses. Point creep continues every year and applicants applying grows exponentially. Total resident moose pt. holders is 23,186. Total resident sheep pt holders is 15,116. With the new 90-10 there will be about 300 moose tags and 165 sheep tags for residents at current levels. They need to have a cut-off line somewhere if moose and sheep are going to OIL. Might as well start with those that have had a tag in the last 5 years.

Here's the number of resident applicants with 1-4 pts for those species.
Moose: 1 pt-3845 2pt-2388 3pt-1868 4pt-1617

Sheep: 1 pt-2521 2pt-1636 3pt-1271 4pt-1087

I really don't see the true preference point system lasting too much longer in Wyoming with that kind of supply/demand.

How’s 2022 going to shake out? I always support the underdog. This is your year!!!

That area has been pounded over the last 3 years. The outfitters have moved in not much left to hunt. I'm going to hunt new areas this year.

Wait a minute lol..... your hunting strategy is to go into the bucks "layer" and spook them ? that would explain why you haven't killed your target bucks then founder is using guys like you as a bird dog

Well ain’t that something I just got back into the sheep game , wasn’t going to but I seen the once in a lifetime coming so I said what the hell eligible again starting this year so I applied instead of waiting just to get a point, in system now so go ahead with the once in a lifetime ?

Not necessarily, but I'm not afraid to get in the bucks layer even if I spooks them out. This buck was in a tough spot to kill. No way to get across a canyon to see him. He required hand to hand combat to kill him. No 2700 yard kill shot available on him.

I'm on year three back in moose but will be out for sheep.

Anyone that has drawn and in the waiting period will be out under once in a lifetime.

I wouldn't care if I never draw another moose, sheep, or goat. I've drawn goat and moose in Montana, sheep and moose in Wyoming...I'm good letting others experience some of those hunts.

I hope it takes you 40 points to draw or should i say bonus points!!!!!

If you draw can i be invinted?

Apparently I misspoke here as legislators are trying to add to the bill that anyone under the 5 year restriction is life-timed out.

Its a lot to soak in when they say once in a lifetime. I am good with it. My dad is jumping with joy knowing he will never have to do this again. Lol.

But someday i will hunt sheep again in wyoming. When my 2 boys draw a tag. Then I will know the pain my dad went through

I've never got the privilege to hunt moose or sheep for myself but I have points built up and I'm not going to chase the top areas I'll settle for a decent one and do my best to find the highest quality animals within them and I'll be happy with that for my one in a lifetime experience and I hope everyone gets to experience it once and treat it as a once in a lifetime hunt if they dont thats their own fault

Yes if it ever happens again lol, I’m totally for once in a lifetime, but didn’t see not getting back in since I could, I know a guy that’s been putting in for sheep

Yes your invited lol, may never happen again but honestly I’m fine with it, I’m all for the once in a lifetime, and wasn’t gonna get back into the sheep game but after a thinking about it why the hell not, what I would like though is to draw the mnt goat, something new!! And that’s a tall order so fingers crossed but the been crossed for long time so now they are permanently crossed, stuck like Siamese twins??

This should clear up some confusion.

I wouldn't hesitiate to take a 2,700 yard shot, but for God's sake do the humane thing and limit yourself to neck shots only.
