I am just curoius if any one goes down there on the may 1st opener for shed huntin.

I dont, even though its 25 minutes from my house. I think its a mess come the 1st. Plus im turkey hunting during that time.

I went a couple of years ago and swore that I would never do it again! It was a madhouse. Some of those dudes were just plain a$$holes, thinking that you might get to one before they do. Found a couple, but they werent worth packing out. We piled them in the brush and told some old timer where he could find them. Horses, quads and drunken hillbillies, not my idea of a fun day out! I had something similar happen on the Toutle. We rode our horses in to look for sheds and ran into a group of teenagers on horseback that practically ran us over trying to beat us to any sheds. My buddies wifes horse spooked when they came blazing by, nearly throwing her. We had a nice little supprise waiting for them when they rode back to their rigs at the end of the day. We put padlocks on their horse trailers and called the Sheriff's Dept. (The padlocks were to buy time until the Sheriff got there).

Oak Creek is a zoo. Most of the sheds are gone by the time it opens anyway. Guys come in from all directions. I hunted it a couple years ago on opening day. There were man tracks every where I went. No way were they all made that morning. I think with the good weather a lot of the bulls will be long gone from game dept. land by the time most of the bulls drop.

Same as the rest but I do still go up and look, It really has turned into all about $$$$$.

Even open range land where we used to go in about now and hike have the same probs and more and more quads are rolling the sage where we used to just see guys that walk,
I'll be going over the pass in the morning and have a look at some of my spots.
Again my 2 cents but the $$$$ has made it worse, look on E bay sometime.

Well thanks for the info, I am not too sure what I am going to do. I think I will just play it buy ear, not too sure if it is worth it, all the people and all.

Its a frickin' zoo, and I am usually fishing by then, but this year should be funny to watch everyone looking for nothing but snakes. Most bulls are shedding this year a long ways from there. I did my annual monster hike where I usually score about 20 bones, but didn't find one today. The only thing I got was sore feet. Most of the cows are already in their little bands, and the bulls have headed to greener pastures. (about 6000 feet). I hope this helps duck.

This year it's on a Sunday. If you get the weekend off, you can rest on Saturday, then get up before it's light and wait in line. After the gate is open head up a ridge and have a nice hike. Don't expect to find much this year so you won't be disappointed and if you do, you'll feel great.
The elk have a lot of room to roam this year, but some might stay in the areas where they don't get bothered. Maybe they'll stay low. Perhaps not, last fall a five point shed elk antler was found close to the wilderness up rattlesnake and last year we had more snow.
I'd say go this year, learn the country and next year go when it opens on a Monday.
