LAST EDITED ON Dec-20-09 AT 10:56PM (MST)[p]What is the Random Draw. I understand the Preference Point system, but have no clue on Random Draw stuff. There is also a Special Random Draw...Holy crap...what is next the Super Special Random Draw. Thanks for your input.

OK
They take the tags available and split them into 4 groups.
One grouping is the regular price drawing and 75% of the tags go to those with the most points until gone, the other 25% go into the random draw in which any one can draw regardless of points. Then the rest of the total tags are reserved for those willing to spend the extra money to be in the "special" drawing, those are split 75% and 25% as well. Does that help?

You have to watch though. Some times there could be better odds in either drawing with certain points. And then again all it takes is a couple folks with a lot of points to suddenly put in for an area and the odds are out the window that year.

Thanks for the info. Are there Random draws for all species? And is there a "way" to calculate percentages. What I'm thinking is to use up my Wy points or toss 'em. I know I can't draw much with 4 points but I'm not sure it is worth the $ anymore. I'm only after archery elk, deer and moose. A buddy drew elk with 3 points, but I think that was one of those special/random/win the lottery deals...any advise is appreciated.

And I'm not concerned about trophies, just a great hunt would do.

My understanding is that there is only the one drawing.

It's just that there are, in those units that have random tags available, some tags that will/can go to anyone who puts in for that zone, the random pool, regardless if they have any pref. points at all or maximum, no difference.

correct?

There are a lot of good areas you could get with 4 points on any animal especially if you go in the Special Draw !

I drew a Wyoming moose tag on the random draw. That year they had two tags for th random draw and I drew on of them.Boy what a great hunt,I will never forget it!

HK,
The "draw odds" are available at the top of the screen, here on monstermuleys. If you click on that and open it and then click on the outline of state of wyoming and then select a species and that you are a non-resident and how many points you had for 2009 (3), it will show you what your odds of drawing were for every unit. If you click on a unit it will expand to show the different drawings such as the regular and the special. Tinker with it and you'll quickly figure it out. It is a nice feature that I appreciate here on MM.

One other thing to keep in mind is the special draw isn't always better than the regular draw.

TRUE in what 7MAG says. Never helped me back when they started that high dollar Special. Two years in a row and no draw for ELK.

Thanks for the input. I'm working on figuring it all out. I think I'll hang in there for WY. It sounds like a little extra $$ could go a long way this year.

From Eastmans:
For nonresidents, Wyoming actually
conducts two separate draws, the ?Regular
Draw? and the ?Special Draw.? The
difference between the two is plain and
simple: PRICE. This is Wyoming?s attempt
at supply and demand economics. The
special licenses cost more to apply for and
therefore ?should? offer better drawing
odds because less people can afford them.
The state basically sets aside 40 percent of
the available nonresident license quota for
the special (more expensive) draw which
leaves the remaining 60 percent to be put
into the regular (cheaper) draw. Once split
into these two groups, the tags inside each
pool are again split into a preference point
draw and a random draw. This means
that 75 percent of the tags inside each of
these price categories are set aside for the
applicants with the most preference points,
while the remaining 25 percent are given
up to the random draw, for those folks with
no preference points, plus the unsuccessful
applicants from the preference point draw.
Basically, the applicants with points have
the advantage of being in both pools and
theoretically have two chances at drawing
a tag.

go to the WY hunting page, download the "demand reports". There will be 4 of them for your species.
NR regular, Pref point
NR regular, random
NR special, pref point
NR special, random

look them over to see the point pools and where you can and can't draw with your available points.
