Non Resident Pref Points

Can you apply for a deer hunt AND apply for a preference point latter in July? If you have a one or two PPs and you draw a first choice hunt without using PP option when you apply, will they take your points away.

Basically, I am wondering if we can apply for random draw tags AND accumulate preference points?

To the second part of your question, I would say YES, you lose your PP if you draw your first choice even if you don't apply for the PP with money up front. Don't know what the answer is to your first part of the question, might be best to call F&G and get their answer on that part and maybe all of these two questions.
I think that if you applied in the first go around for lets say deer and not buying the PP, you don't draw you loose nothing if you don't draw. I think I read where they made this "buy a PP" later was for those who never applied in the first go around and changed their minds to buy PP for a better chance next year.

Now I am confused LOL.........call F&G and get an answer from them.

kilowatt,

Common sense would say that you shouldn't be able to draw a tag and then purchase points, but I can't find any language that actually states that. They apparently gave preference point holders preference in second choice, last year, even though they didn't take away point. I would never assume that common sense is involved.

There is some language in the book about not being able to buy PP after the fact of drawing a tag in that species of game. At least I saw it the other day as I was looking through the old 06 booklet. It is really tucked away as I recall. Reason I remember is I was scheming also. I wanted a point for next year in antelope but had already put in for a 100 % draw area this year as a first choice without thinking. The ink is dried though so, so much for that idea.

I spent an hour on hold with Wyoming Fish and Game this week. You cannot put in for a preference point in July if you applied during the regular drawing period and either drew a tag, or got a point.

Last year, they awarded tags to the maximum point holders, regardless of hunt choice, before moving on to applicants with less points. This year, they will conduct the draw like all other states. They will issue tags to all fitst choice applicants, in order based on number of points, then do the general draw, which only includes 1st choice applicants, then go back to 2nd choice applicants if there are still tags available. If you draw your first choice, you lose your points. If you draw a second, third, fourth choice, you get the tag, keep your existing points, and get one additional point for this year.

By rule, 75% of the tags go to maximum point holders, 25% in a general draw. However, last year they if there were 3 tags or less, they all went to maximum point holders, and none were in the general draw. I forgot to ask if that would be the same this year.

scoutdog5,

thanks for sharing your hard-earned information--that would effectively close the loop-hole. I still wonder if they take your bonus points if you draw without application for bonus point.
