last Saturday (january 16th) my buddy went up to central Idaho to shoot coyotes and was running around in his truck. He went up a new canyon and saw there was no snow in it and about 600 head of elk. I asked him if he saw any good bulls and he said it was hard to tell how good they were because they had aready dropped their antlers. I told him he is full of crap. He then said I saw a few really big bodied elk with family jewely hangin under. So I said your telling me bulls have shed already and he said yeah. Meanwhile his dad had monday off from work and snuck up there without telling his son. That day he found three fresh elk antlers. It gets wierder. They were all left sides. I grilled him and his dad about them being fresh and they were 100% sure they are fresh. he found them just of the side of a two track and they definatly would have been picked up during hunting the seasonI know we had a good spring and summer and the feed was amazing for the herds and the animals were in great shape going into the winter but, has anybody ever heard of so many elk shedding this early. I have heard of one or two shedding early but not a hole herd before Febuary. Can anybody explain this.

My explanation would be really good drugs mixed with absolute BS. He probably doesn't know the difference between elk and deer. There are people out there that don't know that stuff.

A friend of mine met a tree hugger, bunny licker type, in Jackson hole at the horn sale who actually asked him the following question: "How long does it take a "mule-tail" to turn into an elk?" He answered 7 years. It just goes to show you how absolutely oblivious some people are.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-22-10 AT 09:36AM (MST)[p]The earliest I have ever found elk bone was the last part of Jan. Only one single. It blew me away. Never seen any since than that early. I would say some may start late Feb, but mostly Mid march - early may.

Funny story, I don't know how true it is but it totaly fits with the bunny licker you were talking about. This dude from back east pulls into a gas station somewere in the west and starts bragging to the gas station clerk about the huge 6 point mule deer he just killed and had in the back of his rig. The station clerk had to see and goes out to check out the huge mule deer and sees a nice 6x6 bull elk in the back of the rig. Station clerk calls fish and game and the dude ends up with a huge ticket for taking the bull out of season and without the proper tag.

believe me, this son and dad know the diffrence between and elk and a deer. They are more hard core about hunting than I am. They know there stuff. I'm tempted to have then take me up there so I can see for myself, and find the other missing 3 right sides of course

I think I will wait another 2 months. Good luck. I do have a fresh muley set already but I will still wait another month before i find more

LAST EDITED ON Jan-22-10 AT 03:54PM (MST)[p]I seen an Elk shed just one side in August two years ago.
Right after the Fed-Ex van smashed into him,, I think it was his left side to..
Ask your buddy if he has seen any Fed-Ex vans out that way..

Runamuck that sounds just about right those left sides come off sometimes just like that. You gots to be at the right place at the at the left time and sometimes it works out

Come on guys! Harassment isnt fair. Lost a....could very well have happened. Although, my consideration is this...it is still too early to be out on the mountain. period. exclamation! Thats fine if you're watching from a main road (i.e paved) but to be in the hills chasing 600 whatevers now, is complete ridiculous. If I were you, I wouldnt try and go find antlers just because someones announces "hey I saw a deer or elk drop, time for everything to drop." If they did find em fresh, I would personally harass them and let them know if it is such a secret spot, why cant people have the patients to wait on em. Im also not saying this because Im jealous, beleive me. the country is still there in two months and there is alot of idaho to cover. I have plenty of my own. Others may have opinions and they are entitled to comment back. Wont hurt my feelings.

i saw a friends trail cam pic of a muley that shed both sides in october and heard of another that shed one side in velvet in july. I've seen one muley that dropped one side just after christrmas, and one that dropped one side 3 weeks ago this year. not a lot of elk where i'm at so don't know what they are doing now, but i've seen bucks clear into middle of may that still have both sides. makes it real hard to zero in on the right time.

who said anything about chasing the elk. I've picked up ten deer horns this year, and haven't even bumped a deer. Come to find out animals have legs, and they move around.

Hornkiller I heard about the big buck you were watching, that sucks man. I held the horns yesterday, he's a stud.

the other day i was out looking for a dog and when i looked up there was a huge flock of dragons flying over me! can anyone explain this?

I have been watching several bulls in Northern Utah for the last two months. As of yesterday one herd of 25 bulls still has 50 antlers. Another herd of 8 still has 16 antlers. And I found two isolated bulls in another spot and one bull only had one side. I have found two deer in the last few weeks with only one side.
The animals could drop anytime, but from what I have seen most of the bulls up here will drop in April-May. Last year I saw a 5 point still packing in the end of may and I watched him run through a nasty patch of scrub oak and his antlers didn't even flinch. You just never know.
The spots that I scout/hunt cannot even be accessed until April, so it really doesn't matter. In my opinion, every unit should close until April.

Same thing happened to me on flying pigs. Except it seemed to me that they dropped their antlers already. Didnt they usually drop in Mid july?

no, in fact I dont believe it either. probably was a whole herd of cows, but I dont gotta go and make a bunch of stupid comments just because I dont believe someone
