So, I was driving by the bay yesterday and I noticed a bunch of birds working right around the place I kayak for Redtail perch. I mentioned it to a buddy later and I told him, "I know it sounds crazy, but I think there has to be salmon around with all that bait." He said "Noooooo! That water is only 15' deep, even at high tide." So I just dropped it.

Tonight I was over on the kayak fishing forum, and sure enough, some other people I know must have saw the same thing I did. They went out and hammered them. Not 10 minutes from my house. JFP!!!!

The Bad news is the season closed today until July 15th. Dang it! :D

Eel that will teach you to be ready at a moment's notice when you make that observation again. Just think, you could have been enjoying a great salmon dinner tonight if you had acted on your hunch. Heck you could have put up 15-20 pounds of smoked salmon and I could have sneaked over and relieved you of that smoked salmon.

Yep! King/Chinook/Tyee....all the same. The best eating of all the salmon.

I think the salmon in the last pic ate the guys toenails off...

Cancer doesn't discriminate...don't take your good health for granted because it can be gone in a heartbeat. Please go back and read the last line. This time really understand what it says.

You probably didn't miss a thing.
They're not fun to catch and not delicious to eat. NOT!!!!!

Sorry you listened to someone else instead of your own little voice inside you. We've all done that all too often.

runamuk, I'm not going to argue with you on that as I've eaten both. I just prefer the Kings, especially the salt water Kings that haven't entered the river yet. They are a little oilier than Reds, and I like that.

July 15th is usually when the Reds make their big push up the Kenai. I hope you're going to be there!

Just got back from fishin the early run, went a week later than usual, glad I did go later this year.

They were a no show up until the night we got there then all hell broke loose, we had us a pretty good circus going for 4 days straight, then nothin' but dead water for the next 3 days.
This was my 18th year in a row fishin' that run and it was the first time ever to not spot atleast one fish in leagal water, and that was hiking from the falls to the confluence.
Last I checked the run is 20,000 fish behind the 20 year average.

Bears were a lil more pushy this year, I think they're hungry,
was mighty slim pickin's for em.

Saltwater trip was best I've seen in atleast 10/12 years though.

Hey runamuk?

Did Anybody get Hooked in the Eye on the Russian?:D

LAST EDITED ON Jul-01-16 AT 09:29PM (MST)[p]Not this year, word was out about the slow fishing so there really never was much of a combat zone.
