As you have probably seen in other posts New Mexico's public draw rifle hunts are a joke! You have to apply for a group of units and then get assigned a ranch. Research and scouting will do you no good because there is no telling where you will be hunting until after the draw. If you have the money to go with an outfitter it is a great system because you can purchase a landowner tag and go every year; however, if you are an average Joe like me the public draw odds are horrible and the likelihood you get assigned a poor ranch is very probable!
My son drew a public tag this year and got assigned a ranch and we had a horrible experience. I hope this doesn't happen to you!
