I've always wondered how well game can see at night. I was hiking back along a closed road a few weeks ago. There was enough starlight for me to walk the road without artificial light. I spooked a deer off the road and just stood for a few moments. I could hear something moving in the clear cut below the road, figured something was feeding, and decided to take a seat and wait. I listened for quite awhile for day light. Long story short, there were three elk and the little buck I'd spooked. The elk were maybe 100 yards off. Mind you I walked in the broad open into that clear cut. I'd always assumed that they could see very well in the dark. It wasn't until it was quite light that the elk noticing me sitting there in the open that they got a bit nervous and trotted off. I don't think they had a clue what I was, just that I look wrong sitting there by the road.

So how well to deer and elk see in the dark? What do your experience dictate?
