Nice Whitey Skull

I found this whitetail while working a few years back, either winter kill or someone wounded it, the head was the only part of the animal I found. Only thing I've found so far that has some extras. I haven't scored it yet, but I am planning on staining the antlers back to a natural color, cutting them off the skull and doing a plaque mount, so I can enjoy it, instead of leaving it in the garage. It is one of my favorite finds.

Now that I think of it, let's make it a contest. I'll try to score him this weekend or very soon, let's see who can get the closest (gross).

What a great find , congrats . I actually like skulls attached to antler , I think they look real good , maybe just clean up and bleach the skull , that would look great , but it is yours , just an idea . I don't think it'll gross in that 160 range , looking at it on your arrow block , I think more so it will gross closer to 150-maybe 155 . I could be way off , but I just don't see the tape stretching that far , but again maybe so . Still a great find ....NMHUNTNUTT

Dont waste it on a skull plate mount, go for a european! Hell, you are 3/4 the way there! Nice buck, my guess would be in the upper 150s. Try the antler stain and mud trick, it works really well.

Gator was the closest, I also thought that he would go 140 gross, but the mass only averages about 3 1/2", he's about 15" wide, and has very short G4's, the score comes out right at 131" (thought he'd be bigger). Thanks everyone for your opinions on keeping the skull. I really like European mounts too, and when I first found this skull, that was my intention. But after looking at it a while, the skull is really weathered in some places and is a bit flaky. What I might try to do is stain the antlers and clean up the skull to see if I can get it to look decent before I just go ahead and cut the antlers off. I think I'm also going to do some tests on which stain to use - the "Browtine method" or with commercial antler stain.

In the wethered area's try a thin layer of white elmers glue it should hold it together and help protect it to. Rub it in and wait to dry. Make sure your hands are real clean or wear rubber gloves!
