New to elk ... what to look for

I'm (relatively) new to Wyoming and to elk hunting. I've been hunting in the Snowies, but have had no luck even finding elk. The only evidence has been a wallow.

So, next weekend, as I look at maps, what am i looking for? I know -- "Get away from roads." Well, that's tough in the snowies, but last weekend I was up to 7 miles from the nearest trailhed, and that's tough in these parts. I've got (good) horses if needed, so I'm not afraid to nock something down a long ways from a road.

Am I looking for "steep" or some other feature?

All help is appreciated.

I've hunted a bit in the snowies..not sure how one goes about not finding elk in there.

Pretty tough to do, IME.

Water, they'll be close by as long as you got some good cover for bedding. In hot weather they like the dark timber, if there's moss growing in the trees your in the right stuff.
