So i just tore my acl skiing so it looks like i wont be racing motocross this summer so im thinking of taking my archery hobby to the next level by getting into 3d archery. I currently have a Martin Bengal and am very into bow hunting. But my dad says he'll help me purchase any bow of my choice to start shooting 3d. I want to get a bow i can also hunt with though. I am 16 years old and have a 28 inch draw length and can draw 70# but ill have to rebuild my shoulder strength so ill want something in the 60-70 pound draw weight range. any suggestions?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-12-08 AT 11:30PM (MST)[p]I am currently shooting an Alpine Silverado, drawing 29" 70# and pushing 320 fps with a 380gr arrow. Its my 3-d and my hunting rig. Deadly silent, smooth and fast. Defiantly worth looking into.

Take it easy on the ACL I did mine several times years ago, had to get reconstruction twice, not fun but worth it in the end to get the surgery.

When in doubt, floor it.

If you want to be completive in 3d you need to go with a bow with 50-60 lbs limbs. You can still shoot 300 fps with this setup and it won't take ape like strength to pull your arrows out. Most people in the winning circle are using around 55 lbs limbs because you can physically hold it a lot steadier.

If it is for hunting/3d than go with the 70lb limbs. I would suggest Mathew?s drenalin or drenalin LD. I would lean more towards the LD for 3d because it will be more forgiving with its longer axle to axle length.

Archery is a year round commitment!!

There are so many good bows out there today it's hard to say what is the best. I have been shooting a Mathews for the last 6 years and really like them but my friend went to Bowtech last year and loves it. The best thing you can do is go shoot as many bows as you can and find one that you really like, take your time and you will know when you find the right bow. Good luck.

Some be balk at this but, hell I was 16 once and I din't have $850 buck to plop down on a brand new barebones bow.

I just picked up a brand new Hoyt Vectrix online for $450, or you can pick up the Vulcan for about the same price, if not a little less. Here a tid-bit the Hoyt don't want you to know. The Ketera which is the flagship bow for '08 is identical to the '07 vulcan, with exception to more aggresive cams this year.

Just something to think about, you can have a brand new, year old bow for half of what that latest and greatest are running.
Do be aware that internet purchases void the warranty, but I'm betting you could get around it.

Ya i really like the new mathews. When my knee feels up to i think im gonna run down to Rocky Mountain Bow Strings and shoot the Drenalin LD and the new DXT. But for 3d/hunting everyone say the Drenalins Ld is the way to go.

I have shot Hoyt, PSE, Jennings, and Martin and I have gone back to the hoyts. I currently shoot the Ultratec and absolutely love this bow. I would also recommend that you get a 50-60lb bow for 3D, there are some shoots that you will shoot 200 shots and others that you only shoot 50. Lower poundage is ideal for 3D and plenty of poundage to kill a deer or elk. Just because you can pull 70 or 80 pounds doesn't mean buy a bow with that kind of poundage. I have to say though, I just got back from my local archery shop and decide to shoot the new bowtechs, the new bowtech general is a sweet shooting bow, very easy draw cycle and very smooth. All I can say it go and shoot every bow that you possible can and then decide which one you like after that. Good luck on your decision.
