PAHRUMP, Nev. -- The Nye County deputy that was killed in a Pahrump shootout Monday has been identified as 27-year-old Deputy Ian Deutch.

Deputy Deutch was shot while responding to a domestic dispute situation that ended in a shooting at the Terrible's Lakeside Casino.

Police say a woman called police saying 30-year-old James Lacy Chaffin was shooting at her and she was going to seek shelter at the casino. When Deutch arrived on the scene, he made contact with the woman and found Chaffin.

Police say Chaffin pulled out a SKS rifle and opened fire, hitting the officer five times. Three round penetrated Deutch's bulletproof vest.

The officer was flown to University Medical Center in Las Vegas and underwent emergency surgery. He died late Monday night. Deutch leaves behind a wife and daughter.

A second officer arriving at the scene shot and killed Chaffin.

Deputy Deutch had just returned to his job after serving a year in Afghanistan for the Nevada Army National Guard. Deutch was a Staff Sergeant with the guard assigned to the 1/221st Calvary Squadron. They returned to Nevada last month.

Deutch was in the Army National Guard for 10 years.

In a press conference, Nye County Sheriff Tony DeMeo choked back tears as he talked about Deutch. "We have a mission to do and Ian knew that. Ian knew that and he was dedicated to the job. I asked him last week when I saw him, 'You want another week off?' and he said, 'No, I'm ready to get back to work,'" he said.

Sheriff DeMeo says after watching surveillance video of the incident, the shooting was over in about two seconds.

He had a chance to speak with Deputy Deutch before he was transported to UMC. He told the deputy to fight for his life. Deutch's response was, "I'll be ok." DeMeo says his deputies and doctors at UMC did everything they could to save Deutch's life.

According to the Pahrump Valley Times, Deputy Deutch was a responding officer to another shooting at Lakeside RV Park in September of 2008. An officer was shot by an armed suspect but later recovered.

The last deputy killed in the line of duty in Pahrump was Gary Downs back in 1992.

A memorial fund has been set up for Deputy Deutch at Nevada State Bank. Donations can be made at any branch to the Ian Deutch Memorial Fund.

Absolutely these types of people are the heros and they work to protect all of us and make very little doing so.

Tragic, most definitely.
Hero?
Heroes don't get paid for what they do.
Don't go dog piling on me now.

Those are the exact words my family uses to describe themselves.
"We are public servants that are very well paid to assume a certain risk, not heroes."

I have two brothers in law enforcement, one a Sheriff's deputy, the other a Highway Patrolman.

Both have adamantly denied the use of the word "Hero"

Sad deal, but just like the bullet proof vests in iraq you might as well not be wearing anything. Definatly a hero but just like any of us thats been to a combat zone will tell ya its the ones that pay the ultimate price that are the true heros

Whenever I thanked my Dad for his service in our armed forces he would only ever say "I was just doing my job" and he didn't want the accolades and would have shuttered at the use of that term too, but to someone who hasn't had the opportunity to serve in the armed forces and depends on LEO's to protect his home, family and community, that's what they are to me, true heroes.

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" - it doesn't get any more heroic than that.

Go with God Deputy Deutch. But please know first that your sacrifice will not go thankless nor unnoticed and will certainly not be in vain.

Definition from Dictionary.com

Hero - "Heer oh"

1.a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.

2.a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal.

Let's see, this young man served his country by volunteering to be in the Army Guard, he served in combat in Afghanistan, and having only been back from war a month, as a police officer he showed up to a dangerous situation to protect a woman he did not know from a man who was reportedly armed and shooting at the woman. I admire his bravery and he clearly could be regarded a model and there is no doubt he performed a heroic act.

Sounds like a hero to me.

Absolutely. Anyone who faces the potential danger these folks have on a regular basis are heroes in my mind. That could also be true of a teacher or a coach or anybody else that could be in those situations. My brother is a retired Highway Patrolman and my dad served in WWII. Neither would cast themselves as heroes as well but they are representative of what makes this country so great (most of the time) but for me Mr. Deutch, while just doing his job, is a hero!

Well,
Both of my brothers pull down well over a hundred grand a year being "Heroes"
Neither would do it for free, doubt many others would as well.

Youngest bro was in a shootout first year on the job.
Brave? Hell yes.
Lucky to have guys willing to get in harms way for us? no doubt.

Both have told me it's a little tough to work with some of the younger guys that strut around with a chip on their shoulders knowing that they are "heroes"

Don't get me wrong, I'm a cop's advocate.
I hunt & fish with several of them.
I guess that taints my judgement a little.

In no way would I diminish the fallen officers service.
I feel for his family.

Know exactly what you mean about the over-zealous young ones who relish the role, have known a few of them. They mostly wash out after a few years though and find something else to do. You gotta have a more deeply rooted motivation I think to really dedicate your life to it.

How terrible. My heart goes out to his family.

Pahrump is a $h!+ hole. He probably died trying to save one of the million resident methheads.

Like there's no methheads anywhere else?
