Nevada Desert Bighorn

After about 25 years of applying, I finally drew a Nelson Bighorn tag in Nevada for Unit 271. Does anyone have any tips or advice on this unit? This is my first hunt for a Desert Ram and I am more than a little excited about it! I don't think I have another 25 years to wait for another. I would appreciate any tips anyone can provide. My 7mag is good a little past 400 yards with Barnes TSX, my boots are broken-in Lathrope & Sons, and I am wearing my new Eberlestock pack on daily hikes in the mountains getting ready for this hunt. Have you guys noticed that the mountains seem a little steeper this year?

MtShasta,

Congrats on drawing a sheep tag. Now the fun part begins! The sleepless nights, the worrying. It's a great feeling! :) Yes I do notice the mountains getting steeper.

Keep us updated on your hunt.

Congrats Mtshasta. I went with a friend in another unit. You are going to have a great time. Take plenty of time, look at alot of sheep and then kill a good one. Have fun!

LAST EDITED ON Jun-22-10 AT 04:34PM (MST)[p]Congratulations!
This is the Breakdown of last year's hunters, where they killed their sheep, How many days they hunted, how old their ram was, the ram's score and the seal #. You can probably find a prettier rundown on the NV website. Anyway everyone killed their ram and only three of the nine hunters had to hunt longer than a week. Average age of ram was 5.9 and it looks like a 150 plus ram is a good ram for that unit.
Good luck and make sure you post pictures and a story!

Thanks for the helpful info. I can't believe my recent turn of good luck. I also drew a Desert Sheep tag here in Calif. for the Kelso Peak/Old Dad Mtns. I am listed as an alternate and will have to call DFG tomorrow and find out exactly what this means. It sounds like I "almost" drew a tag. It's too much to hope to be this lucky in one year, but I'll take it!

I wouldn't think very many people would turn in a sheep tag but maybe for medical reasons.

a second alternate has gotten a tag before in cali.....but I wouldn't plan that hunt just yet.

great post/pic, thanks for sharing

Good luck to you!
My brother was the first alternate for a Stone Sheep hunt in one of the ext-ram-aganza drawings. A woman won the hunt. I offered to have some of my contacts "visit" her before the hunt but my brother declined the offer. JK
My Bro went on to "finish" with a Stone sheep a couple years after that (2004).
Have fun in Nevada. It's a wonderful place. I hunted sheep there 27 years ago (1983) and with my cousin a couple years ago (2007).
