j,
I had that tag about 4 years ago. I will share my experience, it may help. Others may have different experiences.
We accessed the area from the south through private property that
allow vehicle to use the road (check witht the game dept to see if that is still possible) When we scouted it in August, the roads in there were nasty! loose rocks everwhere, very slow going. I would suggest you get a four wheeler and once you get up on top, park the truck and take the four wheeler.
NOTE: When we got there around T-day there was enough snow on the ground to fill in between the rocks on the road and the driving was MUCH improved. That was a nice surprize.
Now for the animals, We saw seveal good 3 pointers but never saw any of the bigger boys. This is very open, noting but sage brush
so they use the terrain for cover. The draws hold some very large old sage (6-8 feet tall) and they hunker in that stuff.
Now the bad news. We were there 3 days around t-day and the fog from the columbia never lifted. We expected to glass that area, find a good buck and then go after him. The weather shot that plan down big time. I would scout it in August find your vantage points for glassing BUT, I would also scout out the travel routes up and down a few of the big draws and be prepared to just sit on those if the fog rolls in.
I don't want to be a downer for you, But you need to know what to expect. Have several plans ready depending on the weather.
We also accessed the Q from the bottom. The game dept has a locked gate behind the gas station just before the vantage bridge. We got the combination from the the ragional office. However, we did have four wheelers and it pounded our truck just too much to get very far in there.
Have fun, bring lots of water in August.
Jim
