Are the Thunder Basin Grassland open to public for hunting ?

How are the deer and antelope populations?

I have hunted Wyoming several times but never hunted the grassland and am concidering trying it this next fall.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-25-08 AT 08:18AM (MST)[p]Any nice muledeer bucks on the grasslands?

Going to apply for an antelope for in the Grass Lands.First time hunting there. My son has hunted in unit 26,so I am loking forward to the hunt. Combigning it with a Colorado elk hunt.

I've not looked at the walk in area but I don't recall much public land?? There are a few sections to the west of Bill and that was about all I remembered?? I'm going to have to dig my map out again. Good luck at any rate. FYI there is an Oak Tree Inn and diner in the heart of downtown Bill now but as of last fall no fuel there. Wright or Douglas is about it for gassing up. BTW if you want it I think I still have the number for the Inn. Last rates I had were roughly 150 per night, which when fuel was nearly 5 bucks a gallon for me, was a deal.

I think Rem is talking about Thunder Basin which encompasses unit 27. A lot of public land in 27

My maps show alot of public land up between Douglas and Newcastle, unit 26 antelope don't have much but it don't take much.
Going for leftover doe antelope tags and applying for a Region B deer tag.
Going to camp out on the grasslands. I like to stay where I hunt.

Lots of public land in 27 and 29 for speed goats. It was 26 that concerned me if he was headed there for antelope and for deer over there it is NOT a general tag. Deer are on the general tag in the antelope 27 and 29 areas though. Rem if you want a very good place to live on the grasslands and you draw a tag let me know I will send you directions to it. I spent a week there last Sept. it's level and dry camping and you can glass for deer or antelope from the tent unnoticed! If I draw a deer tag for what I have in for you will have the place to yourself otherwise you might have to share it with me but there is plenty of room up there.

Thanks for the offer .
I will be elk hunting in Colorado before my antelope/deer hunt, that is as long as I get a tag.
May see you out there.

Don't tell anyone but there are leftovers of both every year due to the fact Wyomingites ( is that right? ) don't take advantage of the allotment to them as residents. Honestly I would not worry about the initial draw you can get a leftover in July. Like I said don't let this out though. ;-)

Yes like last year after the 2nd draw nothing left anywhere in that location, every tom, plick and harry knew about it. Use to be you could go there and buy OTC not anymore.

Is that antelope or deer B generals? In 06 there were over 300 antelope tags left after the second draw IIRC. Not sure about the deer tags I don't keep close tabs on them as a rule.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-20-09 AT 05:50AM (MST)[p]Last year there were antelope doe tags left unsold at the close of the season. At least in area 26.

I've been going through all the demand indexes from WG&F for a couple days now. Considering heading to another antelope area and putting in for an elk tag next year. Of course a lot of that depends on rather I get drawn for my deer tag I put in for this year. I already have most of the expenses put back so I'm 90% ready for Oct. THIS year.
