Wasn't too sure which Forum I should put this in so I put it in the General Hunting and this one.
I spent last week in Central Montana huntin' Elk, Deer, and Antelope with my bow. Pretty mentally exhausting hunt. I would hunt Elk basically the first coupla' hours in the mornings, then hunt the breaks and prairies for Mulies and Antelope during the day, and back into the pines in the later part of the afternoons.
After two full days of close calls and a few blown stalks I had yet to let an arrow fly. Finally on the third day, I was gonna work my way around an old dried up creek bottom into an area I had seen a coupla' decent Muley bucks the last two days.
After maybe a coupla' hundred yards into it I jumped a Whitetail buck! Surprised the heck outta me. Very few Whiteys in this area. The last thing on my mind when I went back there was shooting a Whitetail. Being a Muley Freak, Whitetail have never really excited me. But seeing this guy, and the fact that he was in full velvet, I thought I'd go after him.
After jumping him twice outta the creek bottom, the third time I was able to watch him bed down. After a slow stalk down the edge of the dried creek I was able to slide an arrow through him.
Very long story short I was able to recover him the next day as he floated in a near by pond. Not a big ol' monster, but a respectable 4x5 in Velvet.
My first Archery P&Y Whitetail....
After recovering my deer on the next day, that gave me two solid days left to concentrate on Elk. Antelope huntin' was just something I did during the day to keep me busy. I wanted a Bull! Well....on my last day with about an hour left of day light I was gonna check out a wallow that I knew Elk had been hittin'. After busting a beautiful 320-330 class Bull and his cows outta there I was a little bummed. But I hung around the area and fortunately this dude was working the area also. So with a 35yd. shot and an hour left of my hunt I was able to take my first Archery P&Y Bull as well.
BTW.....I killed this Bull with the exact same arrow I killed my buck with a couple days earlier. After going through the deers neck it was still in good shape. I cleaned it up a bit, resharpened the broadhead, shot it a few times, and thought why not. Only this time the Elk broke it in half.
Kinda sucks having to take pictures at night, especially with the kinda country I was in....would've made for great pics. Oh well.
So with 3 Archery Tags and 6 days to fill em' I feel really lucky to have pulled two great animals out of it. Was able to drop my Elk off early the next morning as I picked up my Deer and headed outta town.
