My first Compound!

As some background, I used to bowhunt years ago with a longbow and then with the new (at that time) "high tech" recurve. I stopped bowhunting about the time compound bows first came out. Just too many irons in the fire. I had never even pulled back a compound. As you may have guessed I'm close to 60 years old.

Well, today I stopped by the local archery shop. I started looking and talking and the next thing I know the guy talked me into taking a few shots.

One bow I shot was the Bowtech Tomcat. And the other was a Bowtech, but I can't remember the name. Man, I gotta tell you, I was very impressed! One had a wisker biscut and one had a Trophy Taker drop away rest. I shot with a release. Both had fiber optic sights and a peep site. That's about all I remember except how fun it was! I couldn't believe how easy it was! And how lethal they felt!

Is the Bowtech Tomcat a serious bow? It was cheaper than the other one. At this point I'm not even sure what other kinds of bows are available locally.

All I know is I'm in love with archery again! I can't wait to check into it further. Sorry to rant but I feel like a kid again!LOL!

Any advise?

Steve

Steve:

You bet it's a serious bow! Bowtech makes a great bow, IMO.

Welcome back to the bowhunting fraternity.....I expect some photos soon. Good luck, but most of all......have fun!

You just gave me hope that I'll still be having fun chasing bucks with my bow 20 years from now. Try Mathews and Hoyt as well. Good luck with the upcoming season!

Steve, Did you stop at Bucksports?? If I remember right they are the only ones selling bowtech down your way.The other sporting goods store sell hoyt I think.I shoot a mathews outback and cant see changing anytime soon but was looking for a bow for my boy. That bowtech is a sweet bow and you definitley cant go wrong with it if thats the one you get.(I cant believe Im saying that since I shoot thier competition) :)

I'm just a few years younger than you and had a similar experience. I bought my compound bow in May. The thing has become an obsession and it's been a long time since I've been so anxious for the hunt.

Sure can get expensive if I guy doesn't check himself, though.

I bought my first boe-Tech a few years ago and then bought the Tribute this last spring and I cant wait for the elk season to get here!

JR, I did go to Bucksport! I've known the owners for many years. Grundmans in Rio Dell (25 miles south) have Mathews bows and I want to shoot one of those too. Everybody I know who has a Mathews sure does rave about them. I'm not sure that with my limited experience I would be able to tell the finer points between any bows or not. LOL

All I know is at this point I'm totally amazed at todays technology when it comes to bows.

Our archery deer season opens in about a month. I think it is pretty much unreasonable to expect to be competent enough to go hunting this year. I wish I had done it 6 months ago!

Steve ,I wouldnt call off the archery season just yet.If you get a new bow such as the bowtech or mathews real soon start shooting it right away.If your setup is correct(rest, release, arrows) the bow will do the rest.I was shooting pretty well with a Martin Rage for years and decided to finally upgraded to a mathews two years ago.Had a month to get the new rig ready and the third day of the season put an arrow through a nice forkie at 25 yards. The new technology in these bows will amaze you when you get some consistant shooting in.Ive been bow hunting for 20 plus years now and have definitley been shooting my best bow ever. Its such a joy to shoot at 60lbs with carbons and still scream that stick down range at high enough speed that any mis-calc's in yardage isnt that big of a miss as in the past.Enjoy whatever bow you choose and get ready to be amazed at what you can do with it.JR

I agree with JR. When I bought my new Hoyt, after the first time I shot it, I couldn't believe how consistant it was even at 50 yards. When I came in the house with a big smile on my face, I told my wife this isn't even fair! I went a bought a recurve, but haven't used it yet. I just love the confidence that comes with these new bows! Get out there and chase them.

Thanks you guys for the encouragement and confidence. Now that you mention it, it seems like someone could learn to shoot pretty good fairly quickly with one of those bows. We'll see what happens!:)

Welcome back Steve!
I discovered the modern Archery thing last year.
Got my bow in April and had my first archery buck on the ground in July!
Best of luck!

The Tomkat is absolutely a serios contender. You might also consider the Daimond line of bows that are marketed and now made by Bowtech. You might find even a better deal. I got back into archery 4 years ago after a long absence and I was astonished at the improvements. I shot better the first weekend than I did when I was shooting every week with the previously equipment. I believe anyone with average motor skills could be competent to take 20yd shots with new well tuned equipment if they used a full month to get ready. I'd set some limits on how far you will shoot and stick with them. Because you have previously hunted, the rest should come naturally. Welcome back to the sport! Watch out, it's addicting!
