Those of you in the mid state rockies (colorado utah etc) keeping an eye on the bucks FROM AFAR ; ).......how much longer do you think we have til the bigger bucks start droppin?

i just talked to a buddy who runs several cwmu's here in Utah, he said most of his bigger bucks have dropped...

I'd say we're at 25% dropped. Some big bucks are still packing and some forkies have dropped. I won't be going out hiking until mid Feb. at the earliest but I'm doing tons of glassing right now. May be a tough year for the shed hunter, less deer and they are more spread out.

Yeah it seems like last year they dropped sooner. I wont be hiking for a while but am watching some in the binos and saw 4 bigger bucks last week still packing.

Have seen a few, but am not going to hit the hills until mid Feb. Hopefully no one else gets out there before me.

Losing an antler is like loosing a tooth, you can't predict when a buck will drop. The only thing you know is that they will msot likey drop between late January and late March.

I'm sure some big bucks have dropped, and some are still hangin on strong. Some two points have probably also dropped and some have not. It all just depends on the specific buck and when the antler is ready to detach.

The important thing is not to run around freaking out when someone says "A buck dropped".

That is why I'm not a fan of early posts like this. There are a ton of non-members just waiting for someone from MM to say the word "Brown" and "2012" in the same sentence.

Yesterday after reading and replying to this post I went up to glass up some bucks I have been watching and the whole herd of 50+ deer had been pushed out of the area up into the high cliffs.

I really hope some idiot didn't push them all out of there. 12 bucks and only a couple had dropped and some idiot has to go ruin the whole thing to get a 3 point shed.

I'm pissed!

Found this on the TU website "It was sweet! Yesterday I went out and found this herd of 50 deer with 12 bucks in the bunch. One of them has shed one side, nice little 3-point. I jumped back on my wheeler and tore over there to see if I could find his other side. When I first got there, the deer were just staring at me and I wanted to see if I could get a few more to drop so I chased them for about 5 miles, none of them dropped their horns though one most of them looked like they were close to dropping. I spent 3 hours on that hillside and man it was muddy, I was making big ole' ruts and got stuck 3-4 times. I finally found the three point and to celebrate I made this huge muddin' hole right in the bottom of the drainage. My 20 TU buddies and I are definitely going to be back to chase the deer some more if we don't have any luck we're going to do some more muddin'! The best part about this place is that I can just throw my trash anywhere, no body for miles around. It's great!"

:)

Ok I didn't really find this anywhere but I understand your frustration. I wish that there was a way to keep all idiots out until about July...of 2099!

I take it im not the only one that thinks most the TU guys are tools!!! Hahaha I see guys out, but not harassing the game, what really pisses me off is seeing 4 wheeler tracks around every tree and brush out there! Get off your lazy ass and hike like the rest of us respectful hunters...

in utah went and was glassing saw 10 bucks, all still packing 1 two point in town everyone has stopped to look has one which im sure will spur a whole bunch of people to get out and start pushing them around, when in reality if they would see the one and sit still for another 3 weeks or so a lot more would be shed off and they would find a bunch more, but that little town buck will spur a whole lot of interest.

Your not alone at all!

I would have to agree about the TU tools but I am meaning all the wannabe shed hunters that post on the site. Not the guys who founded it. But to get the post back on track, There is no point getting on here and asking if muleys are dropping yet for two reasons. The 1st being it doesnt matter where you live all deer herds are differant genetically so they will shed at differant times. Just because there are bucks dropping say in one state like colorado that doesnt mean that they are dropping in Utah, In the area I live certian deer herds are all shed out by the second week in Feb. I can drive a 70 miles away and those bucks which are from a totally differant deer herd genetically wont start shedding tell the second week in Feb and arent all shed out tell the middle of march. I can drive a couple hundred miles to look at deer and those bucks dont start shedding tell mid march and arent done tell mid april so its all differant depending on where you go. The second reason being is that its only the 1st of Feb and deer are in there most vulnerable state right now and there is no need to go out looking for shed until all the deer are dropped and most the snow has melted because if you dont you will miss way more sheds than you will find and there will be laws againts antler hunting in your area in the future.

+1 to both comments about the TU website and the little wannabe's my nephew (wannabe shed hunter trying to get him off that website) showed me a video that looked like justin beiber took his new lifted tricked out allstar rims on it picking up tons of sheds and livin the dream with his flat brimed hat and bro sunglasses on... who knew summer sales security kids picked up horns and +1 for the not going out for those reasons.

Since the post has turned into a TU bashing fest I will stand up and defend them. I can't say much for the people who post to their website, but the originators of TU couldn't be a better bunch of guys! They are honest, respectful and genuine no matter what shape of brim their hat has. I have witnessed and felt their generosity personally and it has been very much appreciated. I have no affiliation to them whatsoever, just have been on the receiving end of some acts of kindness shown to my family and myself.

Keep up the good work TU.

I guess I have to clarify what the original post was. I was simply making conversation to stave off cabin fever. Like I said I am only interested in watching bucks from afar SO I HAVE AN IDEA WHERE TO GO LOOK FOR THE SHEDS 2 MONTHS LATER.

I appreciate the semi-informative posts but tone down the negativity for god's sake. Not all people out there are unethical tools that push the animals around.

I kinda figured this was going to turn out this way when you posted it, but didnt want to say anything at first. All posts like this always do, oh well. Shed hunters are a sensative bunch.

Read the post.... Nothing about the founders I think they are great, good guys my cousin is best friends with them. Was making fun of some of the little "bro" kids posting on their site, not poking fun at the tu originators, read through the previous posts and you'll see we all are in agreement that the originators are great just that site attracts the younger kids with no shape to the brim of their hat.

Jeez i guess so. I was just trying to make some conversation.I learned my lesson : )

Ya, it seems like anymore a post rarely goes without some negative comments on here and TU both. Definitely not like it used to be. Thats why I rarely post on these 2 sites anymore.

Cant you guys see what these antlered animals are doing to us?! They are tearing us apart!!! Dont know you guys, but talking on here makes me feel like ive known ya'll for years.....

Where I shed hunt(SW Utah) most bucks start to shed around the end of February and some of the big boys dont shed until well into March.

I glassed a group of three bucks this evening and all 3 were still packing both sides. Also saw a young forked horn with both sides.

They seem to be holding on to there antlers longer this year for some reason. Seems odd to me since its never been like this before in all the years I have been doing it

Saw a forky that had dropped one side today. Only other muley I saw was still packin. Nice nice buck to.. hope he sheds in the same general area I saw him :p

saw over 70 bucks yesterday and only 4 had dropped one side. 3 of those were forkys and one was a dinky 4x4. still 2-4 weeks before they will all be dropped around here.

Today my nine year old daughter came running in the house with a fresh 2pt she found in our yard she was way pumped. This is the second year in a row one of my kids found a shed in our yard. Most of the bucks here are still packing plus still to much snow. A month from now will be prime time :)

Well I know that there is some back and forth about when the deer drop and what affects when they drop. I've been on the fence the last few years, not really landing on what determines the shedding timeline. Genetics/location or weather? Obviously genetics and location play a role but I think that I have seen enough to say that weather is a significant factor. This year really sealed it for me. I went out this weekend to scout/glass and saw a some bucks and not a single one had shed even one side. This is the same area that I went last Jan. 16th and saw 3 shed out bucks and one 1/2 shed. This year was mild, last year was hard. Sure, there can be other factors that I could be missing but it seems that weather plays a pretty significant role. That being said, I'm pretty sure that by the 1st of March, whatever the weather, we'll be looking at a bunch of sheds on the ground.
