Mule Deer Bucks Crawling

LAST EDITED ON Jul-15-14 AT 08:50PM (MST)[p]I believe I saw two four point type mule deer bucks crawling on the same day in the same area in November in the Eastern Sierra a few years ago. They were not together. Have not seen that before or since as far as I know. How common is this anyone know?

A separate question? How close has one stalked to a four point mule deer in season and out of season? One of the bucks above stopped crawling and hunkered down and I got very close to him.

Bucks crawling? Well, I have not seen this in person; however, while playing golf at Grizzly Ranch just below Lake Davis, I saw four bucks under a deck along side of a house. The only way for them to get under.... they had to crawl! I didn't disturb them so I didn't watch them crawl out. Yalo, I believe you probably saw bucks crawling. sourkraut

That golf coarse has the potential to hold some whopper bucks,I know some guys that hunted that land during its development before homes and greens

I love to see Bucks and have watched without shooting, a lot of them thru the years and States. I've seen guys unknowingly go right past a bedded bucks only to have them remain hidden or bound out in a different direction once they past. I have also stood on a stump, literally inches from a hidden bedded buck, without him moving or giving up his hide. Never have though, observed a buck that was crawling to stay low. I believe they could, probably have, but i've not seen it in proof myself.

I have seen a buck duck, or put his chin almost on the ground, while another hunter walked by. Never seen one crawl though.

Well.....I have seen them crawl.......If far from the truck I try to shoot them in the spine at the last rib.....then haze them to the truck desparately crawling with their front legs. Way easier than dragging them.

maybe in thick brush they might but most I have seen they throw their head back and run like hell

I watched a Whitetail buck heavy 4x4 crawl while I was standing on a dugout mount(Water hole) and we was pushing a old weed filled field with pheasant hunters, he crawled 35-40 yards right down the old plow furrow got pass the last guy jumped up and ran all the while I was tell the hunters where he was and none of them could see him, I seen just that one do it, But I'm sure others have probably crawled by us and we haven't seen them.

I got close to another deer in season also when a buddy of mine did not hook up with me for him to drive through some rough brush I had spied.

I ended up trying to go through it and realized my mistake when I had to crawl and thrash just to move. At about that point a deer jumped up that seemed to be within ten feet to me as I was going to turn back.

My assumption is this animal held up there in the middle of the day and did not move until I was that close. I do not think it was happy with me because the crashing that was made by him or her going out had to hurt.

Since the deer was alone and held so tight n the thickest brush around I assume it was a buck. The brush cropping was about 80 yards wide.

The point is the stalking distances listed at the start of the message wher deer I knew where in the area. How close I got and how many that I never saw and held tight is numerous I do suppose.
