Hey fellow hunters, I got the wife into this hunting thing and shes all for it now. I think she really came around. This being her first archery hunt and all, i think she did well.
Our hunts started on wednesday, but weren't able to get up there from Mesa until thursday. Things started out good. The weather was great and it wasnt warm at all. At first light we came across a nice 4x4 buck that was beded down. But he saw us before we saw him. He jumped us at 25 yrds...OUCH! He was an easy 29/30+ inch MM! Well as the day progressed we had seen about 10 bucks that were nice shooters. Yet my wife, Donna, couldn't connect. She was just nervous and like most new archery hunters, she had buck fever. Ha.
So that was the first day. That night a storm came rolling in and it rained and blew like CRAZY! I thought the wind was going to take our tent down the mountain, with us along inside. But the next was just more the same....wind and rain. then the rain let up and the wind stayed. Yet it wasnt a cold wind, lots of clouds. Friday was hard hunting, with the wind blewing like it was trying to take the trees off the mountain. And we saw about as many bucks again but no big shooters. And Donna began to get her spirit down because she had already tried to connect with three other nice muleys and no luck. I tried to keep her head up by telling her that this happens to all new hunters that have their spouses along and their father in law and brother in law on the same hunt. LOL. I really didnt know if she would make it through Saturday. But then she pulled it off. Just as we had finished our morning hike we decided that we would try another area that show promise a few days before. And as we were regrouping out jumped this "fork and horn", Standing broad side at 50 yrds. I miss judged and told her it was a 45 yrd shot. Well as luck would have it she placed that arrow right in the kill zone! I was amazed! So was my dad. And brother. It take a while to go down, when it did we were all smiles! Sure it was a young one, but them steaks and straps are going to melt in our mouths. I'm very happy to have my wife along as my hunting buddy.
Take care and good luck to the rest of you hunters!
God Bless!
