Mountain Goats Help in Utah Lone Peak Unit

I drew a Mountain Goat tag after applying for 23 years this season in the Lone Peak unit, basically From I-80 South to the top of the South Side top of the Peak in Little Cottonwood Canyon. I have been out twice now and thus far have yet to see a goat. I have hiked the Red Pine Lake loop, up and over into the Little Matterhorn (Pfeifferhorn) a few week back and today took the Mill B loop into the Lake Blanche area. I talked to people who see goats in the area, but I only have about four more hikes prior to the season and would really like to capitalize on going in an learning the area I will actually hunt in. I spoke to a ski instruction up at the Pfeifferhorn who told me that he sees goats all the time up at Majestic Peak. I can not even find that peak on a map. I will be hiking every other Sunday until the season starts to help get into better shape and scout for animals and then for a week on foot and each weekend until I get a goat or the season ends. Since this is not a hunt where there is a lot of issues with giving up hunting locations, since it is so hard to draw and once in a lifetime, I was hoping to get some information back on a good area to best capitalize my scouting time in. I will be going up to Superior Peak to check it out a week from Saturday. I hope to be in lots better shape by hunting season so I can go all out with this tag. The hikes into the country right now are brutal! Any help will be greately appreciated!

I have not hunted that area but had the nonresident tag in 2000 so I could have hunted all of the Wasatch. I did some research on Lone Peak. I know Box Elder and Timp better. Also,I was up there three weeks ago and saw two billies in your area. Try to send me a private message. I can give you some people to contact and I will tell you where I saw the billies they were each alone. One would have been easy and the other would have been very difficult. I will be happy to give you some help, try the private message thing first.

I have hunted deer up there a bit and have seen lots of goats on the south side of Little Cottonwood Canyon (near the very top.) Not sure where the boundries are but we were seeing a lot of goats straight up the mountain from Alta. If you were to drive up to Alta and look to the mountain directly up and to the north, thats where we saw a bunch. Its a fairly good hike to get to them, but this seems the case with these critters. Hope you have better luck locating a big 'un!

Longhorn, what is the access like on Box Elder? I know horses aren't very feasible on Timp but I'm not so familiar with the trails on B.E. I have hiked the Deer Creek Trail to the saddle and saw goats there. I know someday I will finally draw so I want to pick the best unit. Thanks John

I saw hunters ride horses in from the north on B.E. They were lucky because, when there goat stopped falling he ended up in the middle of the trail.Go Figure!
