Moose Meat Good?

I just found out that I drew for a Cow Moose here in Utah. I have 3 questions for you hunting pros.

1. I haven't ever tasted Moose. Buffalo is great, I love Elk, Deer is ok, Antelope are for Lions & Coyotes. I would think Moose is good. Is Moose meat any good?

2. After I shoot this thing how the hell do you move it. It would seem to me it's a cut up and pack out kind of deal. But can a Horse/AVT pull these things?

3. Can someone recommend a good butcher in Salt Lake County. I have always used one in Emery County. But, I don't want to drive the meat 3 hours to get it to a locker.

Moose meat is awesome!!!
Most moose are quartered on the spot unless you shoot one that drops on the road. The moose I shot last year pretty much dropped on the road and I still quartered it on the spot to get it to fit in my little rig.

1-Moose meat is awesome, I wish I could get one every year.

2- The ONLY way yer gonna move one with an ATV is in quarters, and very carefully.

3-Try Hunsaker's Meats in WVC. Big locker, good cutter.

mmmmmm....moose burgers....

It is alot of meat, hope you have alot of friends.... If so have them come and help you pack it out for a quarter of the meat. Always seems like a fair trade. I have packed out 2 of them, both times in exchange for meat and a cool experience. I would de-bone it out on the spot, don't bother gutting it. Get your pictures and start cutting. It is much easier this way. Bring good quality canvas game bags and a good freighter pack of some sort. I used the Wilderness specialties frame pack on a recent alaska hunt and it worked great. If your carrying out that big animal, there is no need to carry the bones out too. Unless, there are regulations that require it.
Moose meat is pretty good, love it cut thin with brown gravy over rice.
Good luck...

MY WYOMING BULL WAS THE BEST WILD MEAT I'VE HAD, AND THERE WAS PLENTY OF IT. I'M 100% DRAW IN MOST UNITS, WITH 7 POINTS. I WILL BE ON THAT HUNT IN 2006 MOST LIKLY. ANY ONE HAVE A GOOD UNIT SUGGESTION, WILL SHARE MOOSE MEAT. TAKE ER EASY, YD.

If you take your moose to Hunsakers Meat in West Valley then you might as well throw your money in the garbage and the meat should be flushed down the toilet. Hunsakers are the worst meat service I have ever dealt with. I took a deer in there a few years ago. I requested loin steaks, burger, and jerky. When I went to pick it up I was told they were out of Deer Jerky. How could that be, well they sold MY jerky. Then I walked in the back with the guy and he said I get x pounds or steaks so he reaches into a large container and pulls out a few packages, then he walks to the burger container and pulls out my allotment of burger. I guarantee you that I only had a 1 in 1,000 chance of getting my deer back.

Now to your questions. You should be fine hauling the animal 3 hours to your home town. I would reccomend skinning the moose as soon as possible because the hide and hair hold the heat in better than a -50 mummy bag. I think you could cut the animal in half behind the last rib to haul it on a 4 wheeler, drag it downhill, or load it in the truck. We have cut them in half and loaded a half on a snowmobile to get them out. Moose meat is good, but it gets bigger when you cook it. The muscle tissue is much more dense than elk or deer and may be a little tough, but taste is great.
