Is it just me, or are there a lot of really pathetic bow hunters. I started bow hunting for deer three years ago to give it a try. The first year I saw guys literally running across the hillside yelling and whooping trying to chase deer. I saw hunters driving roads with their bows on racks outside their PU and on the hoods. Other guys riding in back of PU's with arrows knocked ready to shoot. I had a vantage point I could see a lot of country, but could still sit in my PU. I would have guys actuall stop and stand behind where I was looking to see what I was looking at. I figured that out, and wold simply turn my scope. I had a buck that would rival the one I killed this year (see 05 buck post in MD) we were hunting for two days. I just had my coat hood get in the way of my sights when the buck was 30yds away. I let down and the buck spooked. Some guys saw us sneaking on him, and they also ran to get in front of the buck. They did not see the deer, but were just hoping we would push what ever deer we were hunting too them. They then saw the buck, and started directly at him. I waived them off, and they just waived back and continued. I finally yelled at them we were hunting it and to leave it alone. They replied "So are we and its public ground". One of the guys did not even have a bow, but was just there to push deer. I said screw this and literally ran yelling at the buck. I chased him running and yelling for about 200yds, and he was easily half a mile away going like a shot after coyote. I then yelled at the two jerks, and told him there he goes go hunt him. They actually then had the nerve to call me a F*&%^$% A*% H*&^. My employment would never allow me to get into any type of altercation, even though we get a lot of skills for altercations so we just walked off. We had several incidents close to this one but not as bad. The second year was a little better, but we watched one guy shoot and kill a dink forked horn with a 18" dink four point bedded 10yds from it. When the four point jumped up he slung another arrow at it, and started running after it. We turned him in to F&G, but he claimed he only drew. I understand because he did not wound it so we could show evidence the guy could not be cited. The freaking law. This year we watched three guys try to kill the buck I killed while my buddy was hunting it. (See story in MD) He tried to wave them off, but they just continued on after the deer. They could not get close enough but pushed the deer out. My friends and the jerks had a little exchange later in the day. I know the impression was made because even though we saw them they never came back into the canyon "Lucky" was in. It was good they did because I know my friend would have simply gone to blows with out another word. Win or lose he would do it every day because to him and me right is right. My bud works for himself, so if he gets into a little tussle he still makes a living. So, fill me in because I never had this much crap from other hunters even elk hunting with a rifle. Everyone tells me the worst hunters are switching over to bow now because they have longer to hunt. I gues they could never kill one with a gun, so they think with more time they can with a bow. Just some comments and wondering what others have experienced.

Sounds like your hunting in an overcrowded area. My only experience is that I was after a elk that was coming in towards me and a Hunter must have heard us but maybe he didn't know I was there calling him in. He blew that bull clear out of the area with his tactics! But thats apart of hunting. He's either learning or simply sucks at it. I remember learning how!! I learned on my own and I sucked at it too. but like you said the guy was running? what a idiot!!

From my experience, you have described a very rare occurrence regarding archery hunting. I have had one bad experience and that was this fall. My nephew had a tag in the Jarbidge Wildnerness and we had a guy literally tromp through the wildnerness blowing on his bugle and cow calls and ran a couple hundred Elk out of our drainage over the course of a week. He would come to our bugles and try to call to us (I guess he thought we were elk) and call and call and call... He drank whiskey every afternoon and was basically a total pain in the arse. The really crappy thing is that he went and hired a guy who packed him further into the wildnerness and he ended up killing a huge bull -- a real crappy deal.

I have found other archers to be kind and considerate for the most part. I've also found them to be very responsible and concerned about other archers in the area. Where are you hunting -- what state?

dl19,

Sorry to hear you had such a crappy experience with a couple of jack aces, but I have to say that the area may be a little crowded and that is never fun. I personally hate it when other hunters wait for you to make the move and see what happens. Little do they know it could ruin it for you. Especially road hunters. I have to admit I have road hunted and I have been successful but I have never sat in the back of a pick-up with an arrow nocked. I have been doing quite a bit of research and I have come to realize that the guys you see that are shooting these massive bucks have worked their butts off; hiking in a couple of miles off of the roads. It all depends on where you are hunting! Some areas have people who have been hunting there for who knows how long and they hate to see new faces/vehicles and will ruin your hunt to try and run you off the mountain so to speak, and some people are just idiots. That is just the name of the game. So I guess if you don't want people around then get off of the roads and get away from them. Not trying to be rude but that is really the fact of the matter. You have to do what others won't and you'll get the success that they don't. Hopefully right...!!! What state are you hunting in?

What you described is NOT archery hunting. It sounds more like a three ring circus. The reason that I bowhunt is for the challenge and the solitude. Once in a great while I'll call in another hunter while elk hunting, other than that no major issues. Maybe I'm far enough away from the road that the "I have a bow, but I'm still not an archery hunter" guys are nowhere to be found.

I suggest hunting in an entirely different area. You'll never truly understand the rewards of bowhunting otherwise.

Good Luck
