For those of you that got to see the pics in Part 1, you got lucky. For the rest of you, look for them in the Canada/Mexico issue of Muley Crazy due out soon.
I first saw MassNTrash the winter of 2001/2002. He was a 5x4 with a nice inline on his one side. I figure he was 3 years old. This was the only year I saw him often. I found his inline side that spring not far from where I was watching him.
The winter of 2002/2003 was very very mild. There was virtually no snow and the bucks didn't come down. They wintered at mid to high elevations and wintered good. So I didn't see hide nor hair of MassNTrash that year.
The winter of 2003/2004 I caught MassNTrash one evening in Dec and that was it. He disapeared and didn't show himself again. It was just before dark, I had a crappy video camera filming through my spotter and the footage is really bad. He had inlines and extras on both sides. I knew he was over 200 inches, but that is about all I knew. I looked hard for his sheds that spring to no avail.
The winter of 2004/2005 I caught MassNTrash on the exact day I had seen him the year before. Again, just before dark. I got some rough footage of him but not what I wanted. The next morning I caught him up feeding and got some half decent footage through the spotter. He feed for a couple of hours and then went into a patch of conifers never to be seen again. I searched high and low that spring and came home again empty handed.
A week to the day I found his 2005/2006 set, I went into that same area and thought I'd have a look for his previous sets. With the rodents and thick timber I thought my odds were slim at best but I found a couple old green sheds, so I thought maybe at the very least I'd find some other tine. I was combing back at forth and something caught my eye about 40 yards downhill from me. The Binos came up and the white of a chewed shed came into view. I walked over to it and almost died.
I could not believe I had found MassNTrash after over a year of looking hard for him. He's chewed up pretty bad but that's shed hunting in this part of the province. Even if I had of pieced the puzzle sooner, he'd probably still been chewed. Something about that 'Fresh' tine that those rodents just love.
I started circling, thinking that with that heavy weight there is no way he'd pack his other side far. But, this timber is thick so I came home without the match.
The next weekend I went out with one focus, and one focus only, to find that match. I went into the timber and headed for the location I had found the chewed shed the week previous. I approached the spot from a different angle and low and behold there was the match less than 50 yards from where I found the chewed shed. Less than 30 minutes of looking and I was stoked!!!!
