Thinking of taking up archery as a 2nd. Looking for a decent lower dollar bow. Any recommendations??

You know , every year bow prices climb , the same old arguement comes out as to who produces the BEST bow , so on and so forth . My advice to all guys/girls interested into archery , is to visit as many local bow shops , see their products and what the customer service to you is like , and after you decide what your looking for , buy the best you can afford , whether it be a $200.00 set up or a $1000.00 rig . Then just shoot , practice , practice and then practice some more . I know a few local guys who every year or two buy the latest and greatest , BEST bows on the market , and every year they eat tag soup simply because they don't put forth the effort to continously learn . Just becuase they shoot high scores on the 3d range with high doller bows doesn't mean they can hunt well enough to consistantly get into archery range and then follow up with threading the needle executing a leathal shot .
My other advice , is if possible , buy from a bow shop you will frequent vs. cabelas or red head , give the smaller business your dollers , as more than likely these will be the people you will go to for help and advice.....Good Luck ....NMHUNTNUTT

Best one I've found so far is the Bowtech Tomkat. Plenty fast, fairly short axle to axle, and 8" brace height - so very forgiving. Runs about $400.

You got some good advice above. To get off on the right foot visit a archery proshop and get measured correctly and look at their selection of bows and used bows if they carry them. The biggest mistake a beginner can make is buying somebody else's bow that is the incorrect draw length and then the frustration escalates. Talk to your pro shop and see what they recommend and tell them these things are important to you:

1) You want a forgiving accurate bow that's easy to shoot and not a speed bow.

2) You don't want to buy anything with outdated technology.

3) I will probably be shooting a release so we need to plan accordingly with my draw length.( A release is easier to shoot and you will develop quicker.)

You may be able to get a good price on a closeout model and save some money that will work very well.

Thanks all for the great advice. I saw Cabela's has the PSE products for around $400, are those decent?

check out your local archery shop. I know that the nockpoint has alot of used bows that are good first time bows and everything you'll need to get set up. that achery shop is in mountlake terrace. Indoor range to site in your bow also.

The 2006 models just came out.
I picked up a NIB Bowtech Allegiance for under $450.00.
It's a great time to pick up a year end closeout!

HH Nic bow you will love it!This is the 2nd bow in two years for you.. YOU are HOOKED!

I was seriously thinking about a Reflex bow. They are esentially hoyt technology cams with a cheapar magnesium riser. Know lots of people that love them.

It is good to go and shoot several different bows and see how they feel to you. I went to shoot some hoyt bows, but had the mistake/er good fortune of shooting a Mathews switchback. When I saw how smooth it was, I plunked down the change. Have been happy with it, but just the bow and accessories set me back more than $1000.

There are probably some good deals on used ones right about now. However, remember, they don't have a waranty like a new one does.

Don't get too caught up the the "our bow has a faster IBO speed than their bow!". They all should very fast and plenty fast.

If you are truly just starting out, it might be better to start with a bow that has an axle to axle length of around 40" and a brace height of 8+ inches. More forgiving to shoot when you are learning. The 33" long 7" brace height bows are great to shoot, but they magnify any flaws in your shooting techniques.

You mentioned the pse bows from cabela's and I wanted to say that you will definitely have to go to your local bow shop to get it set up correctly. I didn't want to spend too much money getting my wife involved in shooting, so we went to Bass Pro and picked up a pse spyder for her. When they set it up they didn't tie the peep sight in correctly and it kept moving on her. They stripped out a screw on the cam and broke another screw. Had a problem with the cam chewing up the serving on the string and had to send the bow to pse to get it fixed. Then had to pay again to have peep tied in, knock point set, etc..
I have learned to do a little of the work myself and this helps out, but my advice to you is to shop around. Buy the bow from someplace that you are comfortable bringing it back to for them to take care of problems for you. I would suggest you go with a hoyt or bowtech lower end package, runs around $400-450 for the bow. If you want to try their lower end they have Reflex and Diamond bows available a little cheaper. I would stay with a top line manufacturer if at all possible. Your local shop could have trade-ins for sale that might save you some money.
Good luck.

Great info, thanks. That leads me to my next question. Anyone know of a good local bow shop in Western Wa.?

Rainier archery is at about 172nd and Meridian in Puyallup (South Hill). Great Northwest (archery shop) is just off hwy 512 in Puyallup on Shaw Rd (east of the south hill mall) at the Skookum Archers club. Olympic Archery is near Black Lake in Olympia. Sportco finally got some people at the archery counter that know how to work with bows and they will set them up for you also if you purchase there, I believe this has come about in the last 6 months or so.

Follow the link and click on clubs and shops. It will get you some of the info.

I would look at a used Parker Bow fully loaded on E-Bay for around $250.00!!! Good Luck

Ranier is that shop right there by Paul Bunyan's, OK I've seen that one and the one on Shaw. I didn't know if they were private or what. Thanks all again for the great info, now I just have to wait until April to see if I draw one of the any-season tags...
