A coworker gave me this website to try. I am looking for some help or i guess a favor. My mother is wanting some deer and elk antlers to make some gifts for my grandparents and father. she is not looking to purchase any. She has asked me for a favor by wanting me to go out in the mountains and find some. Now my self, I know nothing about hunting in general i have never been before, dont know the first thing about it or where to start.
Now i have been told that asking people where to find fallen antlers is like asking where there secret fishing hole is. But i thought that i would try anyway just in case. If any one wouldnt mind helping me with some locations or helpful suggestions i would gratelly appreciate it. Oh yah i am in salt lake city, ut.

with out giving anything specific out, look anywhere you have seen deer in the last month or so. if you don't get out in the hills much then start where there isn't as much snow and some feed. you should be able to buy them pretty cheap if they are small though. hope that helps a little

First off shed hunting is closed in the area where you live. If you know the boundaries, go south of the northern unit. Try the advice feyerfighter gave you and also stick to the south facing slopes if you are in the mountains. Good luck with your new adventure.

First off welcome to monster muleys.
Now you mentioned not knowing anything about hunting in general and I think this would be a GREAT opportunity for you to get out there and go for a hike and see some of the things that drive us "shedheads". I bet there are a few members on this site who might be willing to take you under their wing for a while till you get your feet wet. How 'bout it guys? I would but I doubt he would be willing to drive to where I am!! Somebody get out there with him and show him the ropes...not your honey hole but maybe somewhere new you've always thought maybe someday about.
Hell, if you get over in SE New Mexico look me up and we'll give it a go!

thanks for the help, i dont mind driving a ways to where ever it is legal. I would like to give it a couple of tries in the next couple of weeks. As far as looking for feed what exactly would i be looking for? unfortunately i am a city dweller right now and dont get to the wilderness much, im hoping that all changes soon as i would like to get into hunting. As far as the mountains is there areas that i should focus on besides non snow covered portions? thanks again for the help.

Looking for sheds is a great way to learn some country. It sounds like you would like to get into hunting so this would be a good start. To be honest as far as being cost effective you would be better off to buy them. At 4 bucks a gallon for gas you can spend some serious $ and end up with no antlers. It could take you several years and a lot of gas to figure out where some good areas are. I don't mean to discourage you. It is a lot of fun and a great way to stay in shape. Just don't expect to go out and find an antler on your first trip. I spot most of mine through my Binoculars so spend a lot of time glassing. Good luck and have fun.

it's a great way to "shed" a few extra winter pounds to, try looking in the cedar covered basins in the lower elevations and remember "it's like finding a needle in a sage flat" good luck

What exactly is your mother looking for? Does she need fresh brown, hard whites, or maybe good tipped chalkers? Richard Dorchuck is the AntlerMan (He's got a link on the left side of this post). He can hook you up for less than the cost of gas.

I'm with cookie on this one. Wish you were close to Colorado, I'd take you. This is a chance to introduce a nonhunter into our ranks, so come on Utah guys. (I wanted to say utards, but I believe most of you don't deserve it.) Hook a brother up! Somebody showed us how to do it effectively. Spend an afternoon showing him the type of terrain to look for, teach him about not running game, area closures, girls, politics, whatever. One day he'll return the favor to someone else.

thanks again for the help. My mother is just looking for some descent sized antlers. She was talking about making a couple lamps and a shelf i believe. I am not exactly sure why she isnt wanting to purchase some, she just asked for some help in finding some. I dont mind the gas money, plus it is becoming more and more interesting as i keep talking about it. i am very interested in hunting I just havent been able to squeeze the time away from work tto become more involved, however it is definately in the near future. I think i might just through a dart at the map and start hiking, plus i could use some time out of the valley any ways thinking about going tomorrow. Thanks again for all the help and i will let you guys know if i find anything.

Im close to colorado :)

Ha! That's funny chit Brow. I have a feeling there is going to be a TINY window of opportunity between the snows melting and the grass growing to outrageous proportions this year. Lots of whites gonna be found next year.
