Lion Roar...

Was coming down off the mountain this past weekend on my quad...just crawling down an old bouldery and rocky river bed when all-of-a-sudden a Lion screams at me from out of the timber off to my right. It literally sent chills all through me and I hit the throttle like no tomorrow....
Why in the heck would a Lion do that? Anyone else ever hear a Lion and never see it.....just beat-feet outta there????

PS-Be back up there again this weekend after my bachelor herd of bucks....hope I don't see that thing...or hear him again, for that matter.

I have not personaly heard a Lion Scream but I have ran into mtn lions in my headlamp 2 years straight scouting for deer, It scared the crap out of me both times, in fact the second time I was being followed, because I had my pistol the second time I had to end up scareing him away when he got too close for me, but the crazy thing is in the dark they just get real low because I don't think they think you can see them. In the Lions defense,my pack still smelled of deer blood from the deer I killed the year before, and I have remedied that problem and cleaned that pack much better!

That would be way too close for me!! Yeah, I've always had a thought in my head that I would come upon a pair of lion eyes in the dark, boucing down the trail at me. Freak!! I've always got the Glock close at hand though.....
Thanks for sharin'!

We heard one once while backpacking in the Marble Mountains, CA. We were in our sleeping bags and it was very quiet, at night. It sounded just like a woman screaming bloody murder. Right after that a big buck came running through camp. It will definately send chills down your spine. Something I'll never forget.

223-

Good luck on your deer hunt and watch your back, the cougars are getting out of hand. Should add some excitement knowing that while you are hunting that you may actually be the hunted.

Again, good luck on your hunt.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-28-07 AT 09:44PM (MST)[p]4 years ago my brother and i were hid, just off a firebreak trail in the pre-dawn darkness. we hear two old boys walking down the trail, and we scurry off the side of the trail. I whisper to lil' bro " watch these guys jump, when i lion roar" he said" watch those two shoot your arse in the dark" I didn't raor and they walked right on by......kinda a funny story, mostly unrelated, glad he talked me out of it though.

Havent had any lion encounters but two years ago I had what must have been a bear roaring and woofing at me in my camping area. I was out in the Az. desert where there werent supposed to be any bears and left my bag of trash out all night. When I got up in the morning (still totally dark) and jumped out of the back of the truck as soon as my feet hit the ground he let out a roar that echoed up the canyon behind me it was so loud. I couldnt see anything but the brush was too thick to see more than about 20 yards. Everytime I took a few steps he roared and then woofed a few times. It was so loud I could feel the sound hitting me. I grabbed my trash and cooler at the same time and threw them in the truck. He let out one last roar as I jumped in the cab and I yelled back at him ( had to let him know I wasnt scared or anything ) and got the heck out of there! I wont make that mistake again.

We had killed three elk about 5 or so years ago and had been dragging them all day. We were still dragging around midnight when we decided it would be best to leave them until the next day. As we were hoisting the hind of one of them in a river bottom, we heard a lion scream at us. Because all we had was a pencil flash light, it made it extremely intense. It sounded just like a woman in distress...

LAST EDITED ON Aug-31-07 AT 00:32AM (MST)[p]I have told the story on here before bout the lion my birddog treed in 04. This year my girlfriend and I were hiking up the mountain behind the house again and I heard a lion scream. I looked up and saw him @ 60 yards, looking downhill @ the birddog that was about 30 yards below the lion. It screamed again and took off. Kinda anti-climatic after the first experence.

Had a bear woof @ me in Idaho 3 years ago while I was trying to find where I'd tied off my horse. It was an hour after dark, no moon and I was looking @ my GPS. That was as erie as the lion, maybe more so.

Rattle snake stories scare me more. Hearing that buzz in the dark going back to camp during archery elk season will really slow you down. Daylight, no problem.

Last year on a NV archery hunt near ely' My buddy and I were stalking a few bucks that were sleeping about 100 yards ahead of us. All of a sudden the deer jumped and ran off. The wind was hard at our face and no sounds were made. After a moment we turned back around and headed back through the trees, We walked about 20 yards when we could see a tail winding away from us. Scared the bejesus out of us.

NEVER HERD ONE ROAR YET. BUT I DO HAVE A FEW STORIES. WHEN I WAS A KID HUNTING DEER DOWN ON SKYLINE DR WITH MY DAD. WE WATCHED 2 GOLDEN EAGLES TEAR THE CRAP OF ONE BACK SIDE. THEY WOULD TAKE TURNS DIVING ON IT AND RIP THEIR TALONS INTO ITS BACK AS THEY PASSED. THE CAY WAS TRYING TO BEAT IT OUT OF THERE THE WHOLE TIME. 7 YRS AGO WAY UP IN BROWN DUCK BASIN. I THE DAY BEFORE THE BOW DEER OPENED I WAS ABOVE TREE LINE AROUND 11000 FT GLASSING 24 BUCKS BELOW ME IN MINERS GULTCH. I HAD BEEN FIXED ON THE BUCK I INTENDED TO HARVEST FOR A FEW WHEN IN THE SPOTTING SCOPE I SAW HIS HAIR RAIS UP ON HIS NEACK AND HE STARTED TO WALK STIFF LEGGED POUND HIS FRONT HOOVES AS HE WORKED DOWN THE HILL HE HAD 8 OTHER LESSOR BUCKS WITH HIM AT THIS POINT. I WATCHED HIM TURN AND PUT HIS HEAD DOWN. JUST THEN I SAW A LION LIFT ITS HEAD UP FROM THE GRASS ABOUT 20 YRD ABOVE HIM. THE OTHER BUCKS HAD CICLED HIM. HE STOOD AND LOOKED ALL AROUND AS THE BIG 5X4 DROPPED HIS HEAD THE CAT SPRANG TOWARDS HIM AIR BORN THIS WAS ON A VERY STEAP SLOPE. THE DEER EXPLODED LIKE A BAG OF MARBLES IN ALL DIRRECTIONS. THEN CAT LANDED AND STARTED WITH TAIL WAGGING LIKE HE WAS PROUD OF HIM SELF OR SOMETHING. THE 5X4 HAD TURDED AROUND TO LOOK. HE MUST HAVE GOTTON PISSED WHEN HE SAW THE CAT WAGGING HIS TAIL BECAUSE HE CHARGED THAT CAT A 100 MPH AT LEAST. THE CAT LOOKED LOOKED AGAIN AND HIT IT WITH THE 9 BUCKS RIGHT ON HIS ASS FOR 500 PLUS YRD DOWN THE DRAINAGE TO THE TREE LINE. BEARS I RUN INTO ALMOST EVERY YR. ELK HUNTING ON DRY RIDGE OR IN RED BED GROUNDS.

cool story man never incountered a mountain lion or a bear but i seen a bear and its cubs about 3 or 4 years ago about 600 yards away.
