Can someone tell me what the differences in these two scopes are besides the model number? I am presuming the VXIII is a better scope, but in what way?

No one knows the difference?
I have a Part 2 to this question. Can the Leupold custom shop put a bullet drop compensation knob on these scopes or do they have to be specific models?
To be more specific I own two VXIII's 3.5X10 w/40mm lens and one VXII 6X18 w/40mm.
Some help would be much appreciated!

I looked at that link. It appears you cannot do the dial, but never heard of anyone not being able to do it?

They can do it. Both scopes you listed have click adjustments, which is pretty much their only requirement. I had M1 elevation turrets put on Leupold 3.5-10x40mm and 2.5-8x36mm VXIII's earlier this year and the cost was $89.00 each ($140.00 if you have them to do both windage and elevation). The "custom BDC" turrets are more $$$, but I'm not sure how much more. Turnaround time for mine was a right around a week.
