Large Deer Die Off

Large numbers of whitetails have died across the Northern Plains from EHD (epizootic hemorrhagic disease). EHD is a virus spread through biting midges that causes severe internal bleeding usually killing the animal within weeks. Mule deer, elk, and bighorn sheep are susceptible to EHD. Humans can't be infected by EHD.

I saw some dead whitetails myself while we were pheasant hunting in sw ND in November. The farmer where we were hunting said that's what killed them and they were all along a small creek running throguh the property. That is typical in that they will head for water when they come down with EHD.
