So Warner is retiring. Does this spell the beginning of the road back to eternal mediocrity for the Cardinals or can Leinart get the job done?

Also do you think Kurt is an HOF'er??

What do you think...

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP)

Kurt Warner has called an end to one of the great storybook careers in NFL history.

The 38-year-old quarterback announced his retirement from the game on Friday after a dozen years in a league that at first rejected him, then revered him as he came from nowhere to lead the lowly St. Louis Rams to two Super Bowls, winning the first of them.

Written off as a has-been, he rose again to lead the long-suffering Arizona Cardinals to the Super Bowl a year ago.

Warner walked away with a year left on a two-year, $23 million contract, knowing he still had the skills to play at the highest level.

He had one of the greatest postseason performances ever in Arizona's 51-45 overtime wild card victory over Green Bay on Jan. 10, but sustained a brutal hit in the Cardinals' 45-14 divisional round loss at New Orleans six days later.

Warner leaves the game with a legacy that could land him in the Hall of Fame even though he didn't start his first game until he was 28.

In a comparison with the 14 quarterbacks to make the Hall of Fame in the last 25 years, Warner has a better career completion percentage, yards per pass attempt and yards per game. Only Dan Marino had more career 300-yard passing games.

In 124 regular-season games, Warner completed 65.5 percent of his passes for 32,344 yards and 208 touchdowns. He and Fran Tarkenton are the only NFL quarterbacks to throw for 100 touchdowns and 14,000 yards for two teams.

Warner, who grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and played collegiately at Northern Iowa, ranks among the career leaders in a variety of passing statistics.

He was also the fastest player in NFL history to 10,000 yards passing and tied Dan Marino as fastest to reach 30,000.

He has the top three passing performances in Super Bowl history. His 1,156 yards passing in the 2008 playoffs broke the NFL record of 1,063 he set with St. Louis in 1999.

Warner's rise from obscurity seems the stuff of sports fiction.

He played three seasons in the Arena Football League and one in NFL Europe, mixed in with a sting stocking grocery shelves back in Iowa.

Warner made the Rams as a backup in 1998, then was thrust into the starting role in 1999 when Trent Green was injured.

What followed was a masterful and wholly unexpected season, when he led the Rams to a 13-3 regular-season record, then a Super Bowl triumph over Tennessee. He was named the league and Super Bowl MVP.

St. Louis was upset in the first round of the playoffs the following season, but Warner had them back in the big game in 2001, where "The Greatest Show on Turf" lost a squeaker to New England. The season earned him a second NFL MVP award.

But after an injury-plagued 2002 season, he was sacked six times and suffered a concussion in a 2003 season-opening loss to the New York Giants. He never started for St. Louis again.

He signed a free agent contract with the Giants for 2004, but was replaced by rookie Eli Manning after nine games. Warner came to the Cardinals in 2005 and was an off-and-on starter before replacing the injured Matt Leinart part way through the 2007 season.

Warner had to beat out Leinart the following spring, then led the Cardinals to the NFC West crown and playoff victories over Atlanta, Carolina and Philadelphia before the narrow loss to Pittsburgh in last year's Super Bowl, where he threw for 377 yards.

Off the field, Warner has been just as impressive.

He and his wife operate the First Things First Christian charitable foundation. Last year, he was named the NFL's Man of the Year for his off-field and onfield accomplishments.

Warner's departure leaves Leinart the presumed replacement. The former Heisman Trophy winner has started 17 games for Arizona but only one in the last two years

He should be a shoe in for the HOF. Matt will have some big shoes to fill and hopefully he learned something sitting out watching a better quarterback execute his craft. I don't think the cards are done but we have some areas that need improvement to be a contender next season. We without a doubt have some guys that need to learn to tackle in the secondary and we need a premium pass rusher. We also have some guys whose contracts are coming up for renewal that need to lose the big payday attitude and follow in Warners footsteps and get off the greed wagon. I think Bidwell Jr will try to resign them if they're reasonable but in todays world with the agents today who knows.

We have some great pieces already in place and if Matt can step up he has the talent in place to succeed on offense and we have a great coach. We'll see how much Matt has developed because he isn't a pillar of virtue when it comes to work like his predessor was. Warner is a class act and we have some other guys on the team that set a positive example too. I wish Kurt and his family all the best. If we can continue where he left off then It'll show me Leinart has actually learned from his experience on the sidelines. We'll see if there's any team loyalty or if the money is more important than winning to some of the guys whose contracts expire, but in todays world they'll probably go for the money. If that heppens we're gonna be rebuilding again.

Kurt Warner is one of my favorites and one of the few good guys in the game.

All the best to him.

Ever notice how similar his name is to Kirt Darner.

I opened this to see what Kirt Darner had done in AZ

No, larrbo, he will not. He is a class act, not a cry baby like Favre. Favre is a great football player, but I do not like him as a professional. Sad to see Kurt go, he is an excellent QB and will be missed. (Especially by AZ.)

At first I didn't think he was a HOFer until I read his stats. Now I think he is.

49er fans (me) just got a boost. Now if they can capitalize next season in their weak division.

Calm down AZ fans, Farve is going to come out of retirment and take them to the playoffs again before chokeing at the end of the championship game. LOL

Even though I am part of the 48er faithful, I have always really liked Warner because he is a class act and a great player. He is a shoe in for the HOF.

HOF for sure!

No, Leinart will not/can not get the job done. Even with all the great weapons he has to throw to, AZ will not make the playoffs with Leinart at the helm next year.

49er faithful, take note, you will make the playoffs next year. Alex Smith has finally found his groove, and will coming out slinging next year....

Also, in the 3 Superbowls that he was in, he had super games...late in the 4th quarter he put his team in the lead. In two of those games the D let him down and the opposing QB put together an awesome drive (the first was by an unknown rascal that is now thought to walk on water...Brady) (and one of em had help from the refs...the roughing the passer call on Big Ben wouldn't have even thought of being called in the last 2 games that the Saints played). In the other game, special teams almost let him down.

If my memory is correct, he holds the record for 3 of the top 4 or 5 passing yards games in SB history.

If he doesn't belong in the HOF, then you don't know the requirements.

FWIW Namath has more interceptions than TDs.

Warner - 1st ballot, no doubt at all. Leinart will step up and assert himself & be ok, he's still pretty talented and he learned from one of the best and he's still got alot of weapons. They'll improve the defense in the offseason & Wiz will put more emphasis on the run with Beanie & with a more balanced attack they'll still take the west. Gonna be interesting.

Leinart will get the job done and if they can pick up a good solid runner and another piece to the "D" they will give 49'ers everything they can handle.
