I built some kitchen cabinets for a little old lady one time. She was on a tight budget and just wanted cabinets that she could paint white. She would paint them herself to save money.
So I built them out of paint grade Birch plywood and Alder hardwood. It's a tight grain wood that paints up real nice and smooth. When I built them I didn't care how the grain ran, I just wanted to maximize my material to save her money. Who cares anyway, it's going to be painted, right?
After I installed them she thought they were sooooo beautiful she decided she couldn't bear to paint them. She would put on a clear finish!
"No,No, NOOOOO!!!! You can't do that ma'am. The grain runs all different directions! And I puttied up some blemishes."
I called her son and he came over. That made her dig her heels in even more.
In the end she put on the clear finish and I hung my head in shame.![Big grin :D :D](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
