Kitchen cabinets

I built some kitchen cabinets for a little old lady one time. She was on a tight budget and just wanted cabinets that she could paint white. She would paint them herself to save money.

So I built them out of paint grade Birch plywood and Alder hardwood. It's a tight grain wood that paints up real nice and smooth. When I built them I didn't care how the grain ran, I just wanted to maximize my material to save her money. Who cares anyway, it's going to be painted, right?

After I installed them she thought they were sooooo beautiful she decided she couldn't bear to paint them. She would put on a clear finish!

"No,No, NOOOOO!!!! You can't do that ma'am. The grain runs all different directions! And I puttied up some blemishes."

I called her son and he came over. That made her dig her heels in even more.

In the end she put on the clear finish and I hung my head in shame. :D:D

JFP!! I hope she got Alzheimer's and forgot my name. (not really, but.....:D)

That is funny Eel (not really but still), I built custom cabinets for 5 years, so know the feeling. we always got a terrible feeling when customer said they wanted to finish the cabinets themselves.. We always hoped they forgot us too when it come to showing off the new kitchen. Yes some people can and do finish it good but most are horrible at it and bad for business :)

You ever been back to see if they are still the same?

So now its in the kitchen for all to see, underneath it all you are really a tightwad.

The bottom line was, tell the customer what they should have and then give them what they want.

If they insist on having the refrigerator next to the sink and the dishwasher on another wall, so be it. That's what custom cabinets are all about. :)

>A little old lady, huh. Did
>you trade out the payment
>in sexual favors?

She bought the materials, and we traded labor. :D
