Kaibab Archery

Last year there were 4,412 hunters. Crowded like the fair as previously stated. Hunting would be alot better there if the hunters would just get off the Quads and stop driving the roads. Bt then again, maybe they are all Physically challenged as well as mentally. Not that they bother me or anything:)

Here's some Kaibab hunter densities and hunters success.
1999 3,107 hunters success 10%
2000 3,390 hunters success 14%
2001 3,084 hunters success 7%
2002 2,537 hunters success 9%
2003 2,371 hunters success 4%

Lets just say that there will be fewer people at an ASU homecoming football game and that usually entails around 50,000 people but this hunt can be just as exciting. Think of it as a great big tailgate party and the game complete with all the Bar-B-Ques, noise, floats (trucks with road hunters on chairs), bands (loud radios), Cheer leaders (guys yelling to stay away from their tree stands & waving), off limits... Posted areas by same guys, Lines at the bathrooms (stand hunters lining up to get in their stands at waterholes), Visiting team supporters (nonresidents), Home team supporters (residents), Referees (wardens), a few obnoxious fans (both teams), Halftime festivities provided by thralls of roadhunters on quads, trucks, jeeps, (it's quite a colorful event). By the way, the state did authorize alcohol sales during the game this year to add to the confusion. Then we also have the few unruley types that choose to shoot from their vehicles with firearms or bows until cited for unsportsman like conduct.

It's usually a great game but very lopsided on the outcome. The Deer have won for decades but maybe this year the hunters may be able to score an upset. Naw, that old misdirection stuff never has fooled em but maybe now that we don't smell we may have a chance. Nope, I predict the deer will win again by 13.

The only thing left to do is clean up the stadium (forest) after all the fans have gone home but I think the stadium may have the edge on that one as well. One things for certain both look the same after the big event!

Great post Boskee. I have not tried Kaibab for a number of years but your description is the way it was the last time I went! My buddy and I used to wait until the last week(fourth quarter) thinking that most hunters and weekend warriors would have given up by then but in our last years even the last week was crowded. Maybe it had something to do with the new college overtime rules coming into play?

Since there are so many hunters have any of you herd of other hunters taging deer they didn't should that happened to me once when I was elk hunting I shot a nice 6x and some guy came out of the woods on a quad and taged it luckily I shot a bigger bull later in the week.

I suppose something like that could happen. But the odds aren't too great it would happen to the same guy twice. You just never know about humanity. Look at those poor people in Miss & New Orleans just when you think things can't get any worse people are stealing what they have left. Thank god most of the people in the world are honest and care about humanity. Good luck on your hunt up there.

I have been scouting the Kaibab for several weeks and have only seen three trucks. And that was last week.Just one real nice buck 4x4 30" wide. Advice just get off the road as far as you can.
