It blows my mind how many stories i am hearing this spring from the law abiding shed hunters about all the ATV tracks still going off road. I'd like to use the word "Unbeleivable"....but i do beleive it because i am seeing it myself.
I will use the word "Sad".

Then i get on here and read complaints from a handful of upset shed hunters on all the new restrictions, it's amazing!

What's it going to take???

I think a couple boxes of roofing nails would do it.
I don't even own a four wheeler unless you count my car that has a 998cc 3 cylinder 1 liter suzuki engine. (its a geo metro)
It's even more eco friendly than a prius. I can't beat their city mileage but I can give them a run for their money on the highway.

To be honest I am a little jealous of those who can get around on a 4 wheeler but I do advocate sticking to the roads. Let's try to bust those who are driving out of boudnaries. Report anyone going where it is prohibited. If you see tracks photograph the tracks and take down liscense plate numbers.

you are right, it is very sad....just got back from the bookcliffs, wheeler tracks everywhere just like last year. I saw tracks up to 2 miles from any road, damaging sagebrush and grasses that these animals need to survive. But on the flip side, unlike last year i saw 6 game wardens in 3 trucks with 6 wheelers going in around sunday school to prosecute these law breaking un-ethical lazy people.Hands down i will guarantee anyone that you can find more sheds while walking, you just miss way too much on a wheeler, and another fact, i find a good number of good sheds whithin sight of wheeler tracks...once this point gets across it will eliminate most of the problem.

Lazy is the best word I can think of. And those that are driving off road just dont give a s hit. It drives me nuts to see wheeler tracks off road. Maybe if they have to replace a few tires they will start thinking before they do it again. or a tank full of dirt? of course they have to get off and away first.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-02-09 AT 08:40AM (MST)[p]The reality is "It's going to happen". We have the laws in place. We have people reporting the problem. Its now time for the action to be taken by law enforcement. Its not an issue of more laws, its an issue of enforceing the ones we have.

Here is a great little video I thought you guys would enjoy. wyodeerhunter posted this on another forum. This still blows me away but he was turned in. And I don't believe anything was done. This is in WY, not Utah.

Brandon has it right. We already have enough laws on the books, we just need enforcement of them and a judge willing to hand down a harsh sentence. I would be willing to wager that it would only take 5 cases of confiscated ATVs, 1 day jail time, and $1,000 fine to get people's attention. Plaster the convictions all over the news, net, and local shops. The problem would decrease by 90%. Laws won't deter anyone if they are not enforced.

ATV ASSASINATION is the only way. Wait til that lazy piece steps off the machine to take a leak and put a round thru his engine. It'll make em think twice when they actually have to WALK out.

I not trying to defend it by any means, but can anyone point me to the exact laws that state offroad travel is prohibited? I would like to see what the existing laws state. I know that wilderness areas are definately closed to vehicular travel on other than designated routes, but what about regular old forest service or BLM land? Thanks.

Brandon I was with him when they did this. And let me tell you that these are WYOMING people riding in WYOMING so all of those WYOMING guys that are blaming UTAH guys you had better check your own!!!!!!!!!

We had a few choice words for them, but they kept on riding.

I have turned in some many guys to the BLM and they have done NOTHING, no tickets just a warning.

It is not a matter of laws!!!!

Where in the hell is the "COMMON SENSE". No where in the state of Utah anyways was it taught to go out and drive all over gods creation!! This is frankly the most cut and dry suject that there is!!

There is no one that has that right, nor should there be!! All that they are doing is ruining it for "EVERYONE". I personally enjoy getting out the ol' four wheeler and going for a burn, but all of these stupid bastards that are doing this,(and they know who they are) are killing a recreational pastime that is next to nothing when done correctly/responsibly!!

This year I have covered many, many miles on foot, horse, and yes of course my four-wheeler, but have not yet needed to drive my sorry ass off the road to retrieve something or "LOOK" for something!!

There is no excuse for "IGNORANCE" and that is all that this is!! Hopefully the law enforcement officers realize how much money could be made by just simply watching a few different places here and there!!

Sorry for venting but to me personally there is not a diplomatic way of expressing "STUPIDITY"

That's why I'm asking. What exactly is the law? What are the potential fines? I know that I've discussed this many times with people and no one seems to really know the answer other than on designated wilderness.

Downsouth first off call a BLM office and they will be more than happy to tell you the law, do not take what you hear on ANY site as the law (it is always missing something) BUT the Law is that you can not drive any motorized vehicle (except for a snowmobile) across public land when there is NO road present --PERIOD. ( and if there is ANY question about the road being open or not--get a usage map from the BLM office and it will show you what roads are open) Now I know most if not all of us have driven to a fallen animal to retrieve it, but for the most part no one has ever killed an animal in the SAME spot year after year and caused a road to be established by doing this activity. But if MANY people are hitting the same spots looking for horns, then you can see how this will kill the sage and then let all of the grass to grow (I am sure we have enough cows on our public lands). In the state of wyoming the only person that can give you a ticket (until recent changes) was the BLM officer--other could detain you until a BLM officer arrived (that assumes you can get a hold of one). Lets be honest there are a few BLM officers and Game and Fish officers out in the field due to budget cuts, but frankly a person driving across the sage brush in his ATV for the purpose of looking for sheds is no different than a poucher. One is pouching animals and the other is pouching the food that keeps them alive. Sure there is a lot of sage, but then again there were a lot of deer at one time.
Now of course this rule does not apply to private ground so you can do whatever the heck you want to if you own it.

Utah State criminal and traffic code 41-22-13 , Prohibited uses . Goes on to state that no person may operate an off highway vehicle in a manner which causes damage to the environment ,harrassment of wildlife .
Some body asked what specific laws there where about driving off road . Besides the common sense factor , the above mentioned law is whats in place for Utah .

??The signs at the bottom of most every canyon stating ATV travel restricted to existing roads only!!

Like mentioned above it all boils down to common sense no matter what the law EXACTLY states. But therin lies most our problems today.

?Life is like a ten speed bike. Most of us have gears we never use!?

I have a good friend whoi is a USFS law enforcement officer and I know he takes this stuff serious and will do everything legally possible as long as he has credible evidence to violation. He has even caught a couple poachers while investigating ATV violations.

If any of you are in the east, south east corner of the state and collect evidence of abuse blast me a PM and I will get his info to you.

Its sad but no one seems to be man enough to enforce it so it will never change until the dwr or blm actually does something about it.
