These sheds are from a deer that you may remember seeing shed both sides at the same time in an older eastman mule deer video.
The skull is a replica of a mule deer skull that I mounted them on.
Never forget the day this buck shed both sides at the same time I am sure it will be the only oppurtunity in my life to witness a buck even shedding one side let alone both.Yes I would call it very lucky to witness this.It was caught on film a good friend had his video going when this buck and another started to bound off next thing I know I seen this buck flip his head back as we witnessed both antlers fall from his head.Sure made it easy to find this bucks sheds thats for sure.
To make it fair on who gets to keep the mount I will keep it at my house for one year and Ryan can keep it at his house for one year. Now if I could just figure out how to hook up a small video screen between the skull and oak base with a small play button this event could be seen over and over of this buck shedding his antlers at the same time.
Thanks Bugler,
These antlers were very dark if I had a dollar for everytime somebody has asked me why I stained the antlers I would be rich.
This is the color they were when the dropped they are very dark brown he must have been living in some dark thick pines is all I can figure.
lv4huntn,
As far as the score I remember it being close to 180 gross with guessing on the inside width maybe I should score it again now that its on a skull.I was sent a free copy some years ago when Eastmans put it out on one of his vhs tapes but lost my copy and never did get it returned.I think it was Pure Mule Deer and I dont even know if Eastmans still has it available or if they have put it on a new dvd.Quick question to those that have this tape what was it called? I would like to get another copy of it if Eastmans still has this available.
Thanks.
LAST EDITED ON Jun-08-08 AT 09:09AM (MST)[p]Looks great can you tell me where you got the fake skull? I have a set of sheds I would like to do the same with.
Thanks
Jeremy
Mckenzie taxidermy supply is where I purchased my skull. The skull will come with 2 metal posts you will need to drill out the bottom of the core of your antler sheds put one of your sheds in vice wrap it with a thick towell so you do not damage shed before you drill make sure you drill the holes at least 1/4 larger than the metal posts that your skull will have packaged with skull drill a pilot hole first then use a butterfly bit to finish this task go slow and make sure you stay on a good angle and try to stay in the center drill the depth about half of the metal post mark your bit using a perm magic marker. The fake skull will have a hole pre drilled in the skull for these posts to epoxy in.I used 5 minute epoxy I highly suggest placing wax paper over your skull to protect it from getting any epoxy on your skull. You will need to square up your skull on a flat table and place plastic milk containers on the outsides and get your rack in the position you want it. Once I had the correct place I used grabber screws to secure the milk cartons down on table so they would not move you can also use small grabber screws to hold the skull down to table I placed 2 on the outside edge of the eye sockets and a couple near the nose just so the skull does not slide around OUTSIDE OF THE SKULL ONLY.Try and make the width of rack look natural some try and make bucks look wider than what they really were and it just does not look correct in my opinion.Anyway after the antlers have been attached to metal posts slide the posts down in the holes on the skull make sure everything looks sqaure and pull them back out mix more 5 minute epoxy and fill skull holes half way remember to cover skull with wax paper entire skull or you may have a mess on your hands.Place antlers back on skull and move to desired place you want them let epoxy set up for 5 full minutes before touching them.Fill holes around these posts one more time antlers and skull leave about 1/8 inch so this area can be filled in later and let set up another 5 minutes. After this is complete you may want to use a good patch or epoxy putty that you can pick up from a taxidermy supply and fill in around the burr and skull where antlers meet skull bases you can fill the joints and smooth it in with a wet finger let dry and if you get any shrinkage repeat process until it looks natural.I used masking tape to go around burr of antlers and used plastic wrap to cover rack on both sides so I would not get white aerosol paint on sheds or antlers.Spray your skull with a flat white just fog it on so you do not get any runs, let dry and fog on some clear lacquer SATIN OR FLAT ONLY FINISH.The oak base that I used was also purchased from Mckenzie taxidermy. After everything is dry you can now center skull on oak skull plate measure for where you want to screw to the wood block that is on bottom of skull use a grabber screw from the bottom of oak base that will sink in the skull at least 3/8 this should hold the skull but I also put one more just to be safe 1/2 inch down from this one near the end of the skull.
Send us the pictures when you get yours completed.
Take your time and make sure you know how you want your mount to look as far as the width ect.. before you epoxy your posts in this is not a deal where you can screw up and go back and fix or change real well.
Good luck Jeremy give it a try.
Warbirdum, I have Pure Mule deer. I will check it out on there and send you my copy if you cant get one somewhere else.
Here is a cool way to do a table euro as well, it is also little easier. I just used a piece of rawhide and tied the brain cavity to an old shed. It isnt a shed buck, but it will work with a replica too.
Hey Guys, here are a couple pictures of the products I designed and our just now making it to the market.
Slam, now your job will be easier when mounting antlers for people on these.
Now why didnt I think of that?Lets see one of your finished skull plate mounts if you have any pics. Will you have elk, deer and antelope skulls on the market?
Hey WARBIRDUM, to answer your other question the Deer products are on the market now. Antelope is in the mold builing process, Elk skull plates are in design.
The Full Elk Skull will have to wait until I can find more money.
You would say I was nuts if you knew how much money I have put into this and you'd be right.
