Jumpin' the Gun

Whoa boys! Seems to be a lot of folks leaving the starting line early in the Western Wyoming shed hunting areas. I have heard rumors of a few getting busted, (hope they don't loose their hunting rights in addition to the fine)and some might have had their outfit and muddy 4 wheelers inpounded.
I been anxious to get out myself, but lets all wait for the legal starting time. "POACHERS" are what violators of this law are called in the papers, nobody on MM wants that lable.
Dude that stuck his truck North of Evanston and had to walk out: maybe the long walk gave you time to consider if trying to "get a jump" was worth it? Chill and Wait!!!

Hope they Impound every lowlife law breakin Plick on their wheelers!

RE: Jumpin' the Gun

They nailed someone at cruel jacks in rock springs confinscated 27 antlers and are trying to take away hunting rights for 2 years hate to see it come to that but if that's what it takes, I havn't noticed a difference in the amount of traffic out and about even with the season still 4 wheeler tracks down every ridge and up every draw

RE: Jumpin' the Gun

How do these laws work? Are they just restricted to public land or do they apply to private land as well? Just wondering because here in MT only a few game refuges have certain restrictions regarding when you can look.

RE: Jumpin' the Gun

all public land west of the continental divide except for the great divide basin no gathering of antlers before may 1st

RE: Jumpin' the Gun

For every person they catch there is 10 people that get away with it. In my opinion they have only caught less than 1 % of the people that have went out early. I work in the oil field and it was joke this year, just as many guys antler hunting as any other year actually seen more guys out this year than I have any other. It was like there wasn't even a law. There was people every where picking up antlers. We called so many people in and there was hardly any follow up from the wardens, they took a day or two to get back to us but most of the time we never heard back from the wardens. We got to where we stopped calling people in.

RE: Jumpin' the Gun

It sad but true, come Saturday all we will see at first light will be ATV and horse tracks (from a week to a month old ATV and horse tracks). I wonder if this new law has stopped some of the old boys from Rich County going out in March, or if it's just opened it up for them to have a free for all. I talked to the Game Warden three years ago out there, he has busted a group of guys from Rich County on and off for 15 years, and he said they are right back at it again the next year. Talking to the BLM, they said due to the ATV's running hell across Lincoln County (the west side) the past two years that they have extra BLM and Fish and Game officers coming down this year to bust guys. For us Horse men and Boot guys, I hope that's the case...we might not get chased off every deer trail this year by an ATV.

Let's pray they make a fortune off of violators this Saturday.

RE: Jumpin' the Gun

I know some folks through ignorance or greed have been out early, but I hope we still have plenty of horn to pick. I am looking forward to getting my kids out and finding a few. I know G&F and BLM folks have been out a lot more than years past, the results of the "legal season horn take" will tell if that has been enough.
I am curious if a result of the new shed season in W Wyoming will be a shorter line for the "Jax Hole Horn Scramble".
I wonder where should a guy go?....

RE: Jumpin' the Gun

Maybe you and the game and fish can let us all know when it is ok to go out and ride our horses, ATVS and walk around on public land. Instead of busting the people harassing the deer and elk herds the game and fish shut it off to everyone what makes you think they can stop people from going out on public land. So are they going to shut down the oil field because you drive down the road and scare some deer or stop us from going out calling coyotes? I think instead of making another law they should have enforced the ones they already had better. So let me know when you think it is ok to come out onto the game and fishes property. Never thought I would have to go to Utah to pick up sheds.

RE: Jumpin' the Gun

calm down man, no one said you couldn't if an areas posted stay out of it, I've been bear baiting 4 about 3 weeks and I noticed a lot of tracks in places where there are no trails closed to 4 wheelers and contain a lot of elk don't know that they were shed hunting but there was definately a lot of traffic which is the main reason 4 the season, i've worked on rigs that they shut down for nesting eagles and turkey vulture migration so they just might close it down 4 the deer

RE: Jumpin' the Gun

I know just venting, what area are you hunting bear and have you had any bears hitting you bait yet going to put my bait in next week last year they were not hitting until late May.

RE: Jumpin' the Gun

I've just been baiting with my buddy, still to much snow to get to my sections. We usually get hit around memorial day into june

RE: Jumpin' the Gun

Wasted the day yesterday up north on the winter range.Pretty obvious people had been out cleaning up all the horn before season. There's just not enough wardens to enforce this,so the legal guys lose out.At $210,I don't think it's worth getting caught, though.

RE: Jumpin' the Gun

We (7 including kids) found 12 deer sheds, with 10 being brown. Nothing big, though all are 3 and 4 points. I would have expected a lot more horn in the areas I was in, but can't say for sure it had been hunted before May 1st. I'm anxious to get reports from buddies this week to see how things looked in other areas of W. Wyoming concerning the shed season.
But, it was great to be outside and walking the sage!
