Jan Bow hunt

My brother and I plan on going bow hunting in January. Can anyone tell me the availability of OTC tags for the Northern part of the state? And are there dead lines for getting these?

The archery only tags are unlimited and can be bought at any sporting goods store. However, there are no "Northern" zones open for the January bowhunt.....unless you consider unit 10 a Northern unit. NOTHING north of the Colorado River (units 12 & 13) has ever been open to archery hunts in January.

Almost ALL of the desert zones are open during the January hunt along with a few central units. Have fun and hope it helps.

That helps.
Can you tell me what are the desert zones?
I hear area 10 is good accept that it is crowded. Are there other units that are just as promising? My brother is a "bow hunter" but this is my first time, so we are not looking for monsters. Just looking to take my first buck with a bow. This year was about my son taking his first buck and next year I will spend the general season with a couple of scouts from our boyscout troop who want to get into hunting. I think this will be my only chance at taking a buck for a couple of years.
Thanks for your help.

All of the Southern units can be "good." Depends on what your definition of good is. I've been the last 3 years and have seen lots of deer, had a few stalks, but have yet to loose an arrow at a good buck. I've still had lots of fun though. We usually combine it with a Javelina tag and make it a combo tag. There should be some pig tags left over. It aslo might depend on what you want to hunt, coues or mulies. The coues are in the hills and the mulies are in the desert lowlands. I'd focus on the units in the SE part of the state.

We are after Mullies. I was thinking about either 10 or 17A. I have a buddy who has a small ranch in 15A and says there are some mullies there but not a lot.

15a has some very good bucks in it just a LOT of bowhunters as well.Where abouts is your buddies ranch?I lion and deer hunt in this unit a lot. There are spot that don't hold many deer but some will hold a few good bucks.10 has gone down in the last few years but still may have a good buck out there.17a is a great unit just a not a lot of deer.I have taken some very good bucks in the Dec hunt over the last 10 years,if you find the spots you can find bucks in the 170 plus range.

Actually unit 10 is fine. There are still plenty of good deer in there, you just gotta know where to look. I saw a CLEAN 220, a 175, a 170 and a bunch of little guys all in the same spot on the junior rifle hunt in Oct. Unit 10 is a BIG unit, there are plenty of areas to get away from the crowds. 17a holds some huge deer but it has been on the decline because of all the stinkin' elk that have moved in there in the last 10 years. The Elk will eventually ruin that unit for Mule Deer. Don't forget about the desert units, you'll have to hunt your butt off but there are ALOT less hunters and some of the units have the biggest deer in the state, south of the canyon anyway. Fact is... you can't really go wrong hunting during the rut. I'm always amazed at how many big deer are still out there, you just gotta be willing to get out of the truck.

My buddies ranch is about 32 miles east of Kingman on the 66 near hackberry road. We call it a ranch but it is only 7 acres. It use to be a part of Crozier ranch. He is friends with the family who owned it years ago. They sold off most of it but kept several parcels right there near Crozier. Each family member got a parcel. One of the kids died so they sold it to my budy because he was a close friend. He sees alot of deer but can not draw the area. He usually end of hunting down south next to the border. He got a little couse deer a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks
We did some scouting this weekend. We looked at 16A South East of Kingman and 17A West of the Santa Maria mountains. 17A we came in on Anvil Rock road from the 40 but couldn't get through because of private property. Locked gates. The topos I have show BLM land mixed in with Private. If they lock the gates how do you acccess the public land? In what little we did explore we saw signs of deer but did not see any deer. We were thinking of trying to come in from the 96/97 off the 93 just North of Wickenburg. Does anybody have any info they could share?

>any where south of Prescott.

16a is not open till Jan.The double O ranch sold off all that land down Anvil rock and you can't cross private to get to blm in Az(thats a croc of crap). You can get to 17a down the williamson valley road out of Sleigman Az on I40

Yes you can come in of 96/97. Go to Bagdad, turn right on lindahl rd. after you drive through towntake another rightafter you go over a creek. Follow the signs to camp wood from there.

If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

Duh...testicals!! Oh, I get it!! My 6 year old calls it his bobblesack. I think it's pretty funny.

Fugitive,
Thanks for the directions. We are going scouting again this weekend. Not sure what area we will look at this time. Either 15A, 10 or 17A. We are just looking for an area right now so when we go hunting we can at least have a starting point. We intend on getting a 08 tag and license but starting the hunt trip Dec 29th. This will give us about 3 days to pin point the deer. That way Jan 1st we will hopefully be sitting on a deers location and can start the "stalk".
