The Island Park Chamber of Commerce along with the local IP newspaper think it would be great to have Island Park made into a National Monument....you know what that would mean. No hunting! Here is the link to the newspaper article: http://www.islandparkjournal.com/bl...e-conducted#comments-53455906e4b0918d393d66a9
We need to let these people know how we feel about this before they get the Prez to just sign it into law! Please, take their survey and let them know how we feel about this. Also, spread the word!

These things don't happen overnight. Review the process the proposed Bolder-White Clouds NM is going through. You can read the document and the allowed different land use.

http://www.boulderwhiteclouds.org/

The different groups who use the land meet and negotiate the document. They're not going to create a NM in Idaho that doesn't allow hunting. It won't get the support to get approved.

The bigger concern IMO is the increased traffic that comes with the designation. See Grand-Staircase as an example.

It was the most desolate area in the Lower 48 with very little tourism traffic, once it got an actual 'title' it went in every hiker handbook and the area has been changed forever.

Old cattle roads to little-known slot canyons now are federally- marked with signs and well-maintained for passenger cars. If you want to increase traffic to Island Park by huge numbers... then make it Island Park National Monument.

Why is there such a need for a NM in Island Park or White Clouds? To me we have a great thing going and what I mean is the freedom to use these public lands how we want to. Why is there such a desire to get paved turn-a-rounds, outhouses, and regulation added on top of the rules standing now? People just want to spend another $10 fee to be limited and restriced more? I want to use the lands anyway I want and have others to do the same. I go and take my family to get away from the BS of regulation and have fun. ATV's, Hikers, Bikers, Horse's all have a shot of using and recreating today freely as it should be. Hikers hate bikers, bikers hate hikers, ATV'ers are hated, horse backers are hated for making trails ankle twisters for hikers so on and so on.
I don't get it. Nor do I trust that if and when these places are wrote in for a NM that it will be for the best intrest of tax payers to freely enjoy. Cant get it back once we give it away.
Somebody tell me different.

As the owner and editor of the Island Park Journal I would like to let anyone reading this statement below know that the Island Park Journal does not and has never wanted Island Park to become a national monument. The survey was put out there to make the citizens of Island Park Idaho become aware of what was happeing in their community only.

If you like to see lots of people then National Monuments and N Parks are a good thing. If you like to see aminals and have a little bit of solitute then stay away from them.

In many/most cases the land has been negatively impacted after receiving this "protected" status.

Like Grizzly said, call it a park or monument or even wilderness and the people flock there en mass!

Thanks MN for the reply and your position on this matter.
