Is Postin' Pics On MM Evil?

Have been hearing many rumors through the grapevine that I am EVIL because I post pics here. Everyone and their dog might just show up and hunt where I do. Should the posting of pics be made illegal in the hunting regs?

I wouldn't worry if I were you, we will need a passport, fingerprinting, birth certificate, etc. to shed hunt you honey holes. LOL.

Posting pics should not be made illegal, as long as they fall within the rules of MM! :)

About all I know is that you live in BC, and I'm not positive about that! Have you noticed a bunch of strangers following you around? LOL

I for one appriciate the pics you post. Sometimes you forget that a lot of us live in the "concrete jungle" and don't have the opportunity that you do.

Don't let them scare you off!

I love seeing all the pics!

I think the problem is that in some areas the competition is so high that the pics get more and more people fired up. If you could witness for yourself the way it is in this area you would know what I'm talking about. Try going to a spot that only a couple years ago you would be surprised if more than a couple of locals hiked through it all year. This year you could go there back in January and February almost any day of the week and see 3 or 4 guys walking through the draws moving the deer this way and that. Bornforhorns told me he sat in his truck glassing from the road one day and watched 8 guys working the draws seperatly. This was early on when the bucks hadn't even dropped yet.

On one post a kid talks about being told about a bull with one antler. When he and his friend arrived on scene there was a bull with no anter. When they saw the antler laying a few feet from the bull "the foot race was on!" How did the bull react to this foot race? What kind of message is this sending. I am just saying that we need to be carefull with our resources or we won't have any left.

Do you not agree that the pics feed the fire?

There are lurkers from my neck of the woods too. Actually even receiving flack from another houndsman about posting the pics of that small Tom we treed a couple weeks ago. Gawd forbid, someone might realize there are cougars here. :) Really have a bunch of locals with their panties in a knot over the fact I brought my out-of-town friends up last fall and we got 3 big bucks on the ground. Gawd forbid that I bring up my friends from Kamloops (which is just over an hour away). Every out-of-towner thinks this is the place to hunt. Big Bucks behind every tree you know. That is why I can pick up so many big sheds. Meanwhile, there is only a handful of locals that actually will get off the fat butts and go out shed hunting. But, if one guy shows up from out of town, it's Dana's fault. Damn him and his Monster Muley crew. :) :)

I personally think if it fuels the passion for this sport than great. What a great way to introduce a kid to the sport of hunting. Shed hunting has no pressure. It is something the whole family can enjoy. And you can bet when they pick up their first tine, they'll be hooked and longing for hunting season to come.

I agree, shed hunting is great and I wanna continue to be able to do it, but I don't want it to be at the cost of the health of the deer herd. A guy can do it later in the year, I mean really, is that asking too much? I know for one, I would be willing to sacrafice a few weeks or months.

I've been looking at your pictures for a couple of years now and I have no idea where you are hunting other than Canada. Hell, they won't even let me into Canada because I had a D.U.I. back in 1993 so you don't have to worry about me crowding in on your hunting grounds. Its very common for a good ole american redneck to have had a D.U.I. somewhere in his past so chances are that there is a lot of other MM people who cannot cross the border either. Anyway, from reading other posts that you've posted I have gathered that Canada is so vast that I would think that there is plenty of room for everybody to get away from the crowds. Not to mention that you like the thick timber anyway. I say keep posting and sharing your pics. We love them. fatrooster.

I like seeing the pics people post, evil or not :)

We all love the pics and yes they do feed the fire and that is what it is all about. Seeing the pictures and hearing the stories is what gives us all that shot in the arm to go out and remain persistent in what we truly enjoy.

All to frequently people overanalyze and become to critical of the posts. Give me a break it sounds as if Lowedog is implying that even the mere presence of a human being is going to threaten the future of our wildlife population. PLEASE GET REAL! How did the bull react? Just guessing I would have to say that he trotted off into the trees just as any wild animal does when they encounter a human in their living room. 99% of us would have reacted the same way given the circumstances of the event described in that post. Relax, it sounds like the competition is getting to you. It is a bummer when you see 8 guys working the draw that you were planning on hiking but they have every right to be there. We have enough laws and regulations the last thing we need is to be told that we cannot go out hiking for fear that we may spook an animal!

Probably why WA doesn't allow hounds. Ever see the deer bolt when a cougar is chased threw them by a pack of baying hounds. Geeze, probably gives those deer a heart attack hearing all that noise.

If anyone has ever observed deer from a distance, they will notice they even spook themselves. One deer will come prancing along to feed with the group and another with bolt out of the country. Once saw a bunch of bucks bail when a big bull moose almost stepped on them when he decided he wanted meet up with his buddies on another hillside.

The mere presence of humans is THE major threat to the future of wildlife. It is something we have control over. I think I am being REAL! That's why people are being so defensive here. The area I am speaking of has a real problem of too many people being on the winter range. From what I've read there are many areas like this throughout every state in the west. Is it too much to ask to wait for a few months to go out and pick up an antler? If there is no problem in your area then great!

After being told by a WDFW biologist that shed hunting this year in this region is a contributing factor to poor fawn survival then I don't think it's too much to ask to just back off the winter range for awhile.

Don't go speaking for 99% of us. I don't personaly know any one that would react in that same way.

Sounds like the competition is getting to me? Actually it is. It's getting to me that the competition for a damn shed antler is having a contributing factor in the health of the mule deer that I live to hunt for.

BCboy, I like the pics, shows some of the big boys that are wandering around. Specially the non-typicals, don't seem to get many of them around here. As to guys hitting your area, good luck to them. I've worked the country you hunt, and good on people for pulling bucks like you guys did. Every time I think back to that country all I remeber is that god damn devils club! Then I think nasty country, with steep hills, and thick underbrush and thick timber great country(some damn nice wood), but tough on folks who think its a cake walk.

When in doubt, floor it.

Hey Dana,

I'll race ya there...

R003.jpg

You know that everyone will be crowdin the Bulkley this year so you and the Brown's should have ol Dirtywater all to yourself. LOL, maybe the Empire will get some rest for once!

Tuffer,
Had a few days off this week so I headed in there and picked up a ton of brown, even some whites you missed last year. Nothing too too big. Only a couple matched sets that score in the 215-225 range. Guess you should have been more on the ball eh? :) :)

Of course that was during my daydreaming while I slugged along chasing beetle post holing it up to my nuts wearing the ol' misery slippers.

I gotta admit my stomach did drop for a second...

There's a bit of snow coverin that pic right now as well. Up to about a week and a half ago they were still packin round there. I think I'll be heading down in a couple of weeks. Weather pending...

The root of all evil is jealousy, that is the only reason why you are getting some flack now Steve. I always do worry about people finding some of my areas, but that will likely never happen unless someone follows me into them.
I do worry about shed hunting in BC turning into what it is in Saskatchewan. You basically cant take a step without hitting someones tracks, or those of a sled or atv! I dont think BC will ever see those days, too many lazy bastards that wont climb up the hills you have to be willing to, to find all the tine. I really do cringe at the thought of that much competition though...

Lowedog,

Did I hit your thumb with a hammer? Hold the nail one more time, I promise I won't miss.

Stick to the issues in my original comment. To answer your question yes, it is to much to ask to wait a few months to pick up an antler. If you are not out there then someone else is. Obviously you know this because you have stated that on any given day you can see "3 or 4 guys walking through the draws moving the deer this way and that". To make such a statement you surely must have witnessed this.

For you to ask to just back off the winter range for awhile does not settle well with me. To accomplish this to include everyone in a lawful manner would mean more regulation. More regulation equals restricting public foot access to public lands which disgusts me! We can open that can of worms and talk about the consequences of that on another day.

No there is not a problem to my knowledge with foot traffic and the Elk population here. After all Elk was what was originally in question, not mule deer, correct?

As for speaking for the 99% of us, you are right. If you will read what was said I specifically stated "given the circumstances of the event described". Unless you are what you described in your message as a "Kid" and ride a school bus then you are not being honest in saying that you would not have reacted in the same way. I know of no "Kid" that would not run out in a field to pick up some treasure. Unless of course they were into Barbie?s instead?

As for the competition, Sounds like they have already beaten you. Go ahead and blame your failures on them.

Punching Out......

JC

JC, no you didn't hit my thumb, did I yours? Did I seem to over react? Sorry if you felt that way.

I shouldn't have brought up that post about the kid. Your right, at that age I probably wouldn't have thought about anything other than getting that shed also.

Yes I have witnessed the boom in the popularity of shed hunting here. Fist hand! Alot of it because I have been getting out earlier and earlier every year trying to keep up with the competition. You read my earlier post so I won't go over the reasoning of why I think the deer and elk in the region I live in could use a break. I am glad to hear it's not a problem in your area. I can give it a break for a while. There will still be a few out there when I head out again. I also won't hit it so early in coming years. One less guy on the hill won't change anything but it will make me feel better.

I am not asking for regulations on shed hunting at all. Maybe some limited access to snowmobiles and ORV travel in a few areas. I hate to see further regulation as much as anybody. The thing is that if things continue on the current track the regulations will be inevetible. If people can't control themselves then the governmant will. I think Colorado is instating shed hunting seasons and regulations now.

Your last statement is just plain mean.:)

I am glad that we could finally agree. Sorry if my hackles came up. I believe as sportsmen we are for the most part In pursuit of a common goal. Never stop letting your voice be heard, for if that was to happen we will all be defeated.

Postin pics is not evil at all... It is just plain stupid.

Why would you want help fuel the flames of folks around the whole country so you can get some satisfaction knowing everyone is drooling over your sheds? Especially people who you don't even know? And we wonder why there are twice as many guys, going way to early, to all "our" honeyholes??? I think deep down we know the pics don't help. There are plenty of guys with this disease we don't need any more.

Nevertheless I like to look at the pics too, and it feeds my fire...So to each his own.

Why would I want to fuel the fire in people I don't know???? Hmmm, lets see here, hunter numbers are at an all-time low here in the Great White North. As people have fled for the cities to find jobs they have forsaken their rural heritage. Hunting regulations have become tuffer and tuffer to follow, people feel kicked down and pi$$ed on by the government and are just giving up. Top that with the Feds shoving the whole Gun Registry Fiasco down our throats and even more have fallen off. But....the positives are wildlife populations are at all-time highs and with a little bit of hard work, the dreams of Big Bucks do come true. Seeing pics of sheds from monsters that still roam instill hope in many people, that one day, they will not only see one of those monsters, they may just get them on the ground. Other hunters see that if a guy like me can do it, maybe they can too.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-15-06 AT 10:54PM (MST)[p] bigbones,

I read your post and you make it seem like everyone is in a big competition against each other(at least thats how I interpreted it).

I think most people hunt for self satisfaction and to have fun with friends/family.I also believe most people here on MM log on each day cause they like to discuss hunting topics with thier "cyber friends". I have had alot of fun over the years here on MM sharing photo's and dicussing hunting.I really enjoy looking at others pics and I believe others here have enjoyed my pics.I guess what I am saying is that if your are only into hunting for the competition you are missing the big picture.

well, I now see that I was being a bit selfish. I guess where you live it is a bonus for more people to take an active interest in animals and the outdoors.
Here where I live there are too many people outdoors and all we hear is how their (the feds. and state) going to have to shut down this, and make new laws about that. These "newbies" ase a problem besause they are the ones who do the stupid things that make all antler hunters look bad. Around here shed hunters are like criminals because of bad publicity. I lay a good portion of that blame on beginners, and they are using this forum to feed the fire. You guys do set good example of how this type hunting should be done and diserve some credit. I several guys like me with some dang nice pics who keep them on the shelf at home so as not to accidentally contribute to the downfall of the sport. As I said though to each his own and I now realize you may need some more shed hunters up there where you are, but here the idiots have worn out our welcome.

Don't worry what other guys say when it gets negative , I say if your willing to take time to snap pictures , and then post em up on here then we should either appreciate the pics and say thanks , or shut the hell up , getting tired of all the moaning...I say keep your pics coming , many of us enjoy...NM

What the heck is a MDF anyways????? Does that stand for Mule Deer Freak????? Cuzz there sure are lots of those around this place. :)
