Is Monster Muleys, and other websites like it responsible for the popularity of shed hunting?

If so, is that a good thing or bad?

I started hunting sheds when I was a kid one particular buck ruined it around here, people went out to find his horns and a lot of them kept looking. I quit looking for deer sheds when I started finding less than 10 antlers a walk alot of the guys I grew up hunting with have quit shed hunting I can remember when 30 a day was a bad day now 10 to 20 a day seems like a good one

I don't think its the horn buyers fault at all. Horn hunting has become extremely popular in recent years even though horn prices have gone down. I think its because of people sharing their incredible success on sites like these inspiring others to go out and look. Also, as hunting opportunity decreased in some states people probably turned to shed hunting as a way to still get out and enjoy the animals that they used to have the opportunity to hunt every year. Also some hunting videos have sections devoted to shed hunting, which is what got me into the sport years ago.

But mainly I would have to say: Yes sites like these are responsible. Something about the internet and these forums that just makes people competitive as hell.

I didn't really realize that shed hunting was such a big deal until I started looking around some hunting web sites.

The more I read the more I see that shed hunting is really becoming a problem { according to some}.

What surprised me is that I see alot of people {some on this site] advocate the the total closer of some public lands for several months a year.

I just hope that this shed hunting craze does not get everybody {shed hunting or not} kicked off our open land. Even if it is an over all small area.

I spend alot of time in the hills for all sorts of reasons incuding a shed hunt once in a while and just kind of find it strange to hear other outdoorsmen talk like this.

I believe that the internet may have a little to do with getting people out there to look for sheds. I enjoy it because you never know what you might find and it is probably the only way I will ever be able to "hunt" some of the better units around. We take a week each year to shed hunt out of state and shed hunt on weekends locally. It is fun excersise and I think it is great that people like to do it.

I'd never been shed hunting until I read posts about it on this site and similar ones. I love it now. So I am one that was turned onto shed hunting becuase of reading forum posts.

I have never shed hunted before, I've always just come across them while hunting. My son can't go hunting with me yet, so I'll be taking him shed hunting instead.

People can't expect that because "they started before others did" that others aren't going to go shed hunting.

It's a way for people to get out, and in my case, spend some time with family. I think it's going to keep increasing in popularity and just like taking home a big buck, you're going to have to go farther and deeper into the woods to find the good sheds.

YESS!!! No doubt about it... BAD!!!!!!!!

It would be a stretch to blame MM for the popularity in shed hunting. But I think the reason that shed hunting is becoming so popular is the same reason that many of us come to MM, bragging. When I find a great shed or a nice set, I love to show it off (we all do) and I love to see what other guys have found. All the braggin' gets people interested, who wouldn't want to find some sweet sheds. I remember clearly, when I was 11 years old, a guy showed off a fresh 350" set, and at that moment I knew I wanted to hunt horns.
Anymore, I'm really careful who I show off my sheds to, especially my collection of "keepers". People see them and many have decided to take up shed hunting on the spot (and of course asked me where I found all of mine) Most people have a treasure hunting streak, and when you see the "treasure" that others have found, you want in (like the gold rushes) We can't blame Monster Muleys or any other site. Realistically, if we've ever shown off any of our finds, we've got to blame ourselves.

For me I think it is the 3 day hunting season that is to blame for me. I pay $35 for a deer tag and I am given 3 days to hunt in Utah. I want to get my wife into hunting but its a lot easier to get her into shed hunting since there isn't a needle eye to jump through.

Every antler is a keeper like bonepicker says and there are tons of antlers rotting away on hillsides as we speak.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-29-10 AT 11:41PM (MST)[p]No its not dont blame a website for more ppl out looking for sheds. Thats like me blaming marlboro for being addicted to smoking, they didnt force me to smoke my first smoke I just did.
