He crashed along the Rhine River. My Dad was around Koblenz on the Rhine River about then. They had strung a communications cable across the Rhine. One day a crippled B-17 came flying just above the river trying to get to some place safe. The gunners were all waving as they flew along. They hit the cable and a big ball of fire went floating down the river. A boat was launched but no survivors were found.
