If you saw wolves in your hunting unit...

What would you do? Find another unit OR keep hunting that unit? I jumped some wolves while scouting, yet I did see some elk sign and some elk, but a little worried the wolves might scare them off. I heard from some other hunters that the wolves might have been there for a few years now, but the elk still seem to be in the area.
Just wondering if anyone else has had this experience and what they did.
Thanks,
Kurt

I used to hunt up around stanley like 10 years ago. But over a period of three years I ended up Seeing more and more Wolves and wolf sign. I still saw elk sign and elk but they didnt bugle like they used to and as an archery hunter that helps to be able to get them closer for a shot. I have also watched elk in an area before season and went in opening day just to see wolf tracks and have to relocate to a diffrent herd. If your rifle hunting It may not be quite as big of a deal. Seems like wolves are every where now so If I were you I would find at least 3 or 4 good spots while scouting and not just depend on the one spot. Just my two cents. Good luck!

hmm that would be good target practice to make sure your shooting right. but i see wolf sign where i hunt you just gotta change your tactics a bit. its something we are all gonna have to deal with here in idaho

Can we feed the wolves? Maybe you could set up a feeding station away from your elk hunting area. Might draw them away...

Or maybe you could take some little yappy dog up in the mountains with ya. Make sure its a fast one, and let the wolves chase it away from the elk hunting area... It used to be that if a wolf was attaching your dog you could kill it, but not sure if you can do that anymore.(legally)

I've hunt whitetails up north for about 10 yrs now, and the wolves have just steadily increased up there. I used to see moose all the time, and now, I rarely see one in 10 days. The large heards of elk I'd see 25+, I no longer see. What I do see is smaller bands of elk 2, 4, 7, and skittish as hell! The interesting part is the closer you get to town, the more game you see. I spoke with one guy in the town and he said it was because the wolves get "warning shots" near town from the residents on the fringe, and the animals have learned they have a better chance of not being wolf bait by staying close to town. Don't know if its the reason or not, but the elk sure hang closer to town now than they used to....

Last year while we were muzzleloader elk hunting the wolves would be howling around camp at dusk and the bulls would be bugling all morning down in the canyons below us. Strange. Three straight days and nights. Finally the pack moved farther up the mountain and out of hearing distance. I never would have thought they'd be able to hang out together for that long without some sort of disturbance. Still hate wolves. Damn, that hunt starts in 11 days. yeehaww.
