Ideas for some good books on hunting

I'm looking for some ideas of some good books to read that involves hunting big game. High mountain mulies or elk. I've decided I watch too many hunting shows and should use that time to read some books that will teach me a thing or two about the wildlife. Whether it be habitat, hunting skills, etc. books I can either purchase or check out at the library.

Thanks for sharing any ideas.

Theodore Roosevelt's guidance concerning
conservation...
"The movement for the conservation of wildlife,
and the conservation of all our natural resources,
are essentially democratic in spirit, purpose and
method."

"We do not intend that our natural resources shall
be exploited by the few against the interests of the
majority. Our aim is to preserve our natural
resources for the public as a whole, for the
average man and the average woman who make
up the body of the American people."

"It is in our power...to preserve game..and to give
reasonable opportunities for the exercise of the
skill of the hunter, whether he is or is not a man of
means."

How to Find Giant Bucks by K. Darner. Just kidding, LOL.

Seriously, for Africa, Horn of the Hunter by Robert Ruark.

for sheep hunters, Skyline Pursuit by John Batten.

John died in the mid-80' but after O'conner died in "77 John was the oldest living sheep hunter in N.Am.

The Quest for Dall Sheep by Jack Wilson.

Jack flew Harry Swank into the headwaters of the Chitna River where Harry killed the world record Dall sheep in the early 60's. Jack chronicles the hunt in the book.

the above may be hard to find.

A new book, Reaching the Dream by Garry Vince. One of the great outfitters in B.C.

from the "Heartland of Wyoming"

I have found countless hours of enjoyment reading past editions of "Records of North American Big Game", the Boone and Crockett, "Book". I think i have 3 or 4 different editions going back to the early 60's. Lots of neat info, great pictures, and one can spend hours and hours searching, getting lost almost, just when and where a guys favorite record sized big game animals were taken.

I'm a numbers guy anyway. Can't remember names fer $hit but i seem to remember numbers pretty decent and these books have entertained me to no end and i can open any one of them and find new stuff of certain interest.

Here is an idea that could incorperate all those themes you want to write about while adding a twist to keep the modern day western hunter interested.

It starts with a 40 year old man who has been putting in for a highly coveted LE Utah Mule Dear tag for the last 20 years.

For the last 5 of those years he thinks he has enough points to
draw. Only to be nugded out by points creep.

Points creep caused by the yearly addition of more raffle tags at
big sportsman's expo in Salt Lake.

He complains about his problem on a popular hunting web site.

He gets Privet Messaged by a unscrupulous outfitter who shows him a photo of a super monster Muley that he has found with his chute plane.

The outfitter also provides the 40 year old guy with the names and addresses of the 5 guys who are ahead of him in the points game.

Along with a suggestion that if those five guys were to "pass away" he would have a lock on his coveted LE tag.

You could title it,,, "THE HUNT BEFORE THE HUNT".

or....."Killing to Hunt"

WHY WE HUNT:

1. Heartsblood - Hunting, Spirituality, and Wildness in America David Peterson (and anything by this guy).

2. In Defense of Hunting -- James Swan (not as good)

HOW TO HUNT:

3. Death in the Long Grass -- Capstick (awesome, childhood favorite)

4. Death in a Lonely Land -- Capstick

5. Subscribe to Grays Sporting Journal, and Bugle, and ....read the KUIU website.

6. Spend more time in the wild.

After reading all your suggestions, I decided on two books.
1. Public land Mulies by David W long
2. Hunting open country mule deer by Dwight, Schuh

Thanks for your suggestions.
Im headed to Arizona next week so I should have some time to do some reading.
