fortunate to have drawn a 44 tag this year in Idaho. I’ve hunted many units via the general tag but have never hunted 44. Going in with the idea I’m only shooting 180” or better. It’s a long season.

Hunted it lots in the 90’s and early 2000’s
It was incredible back then. Mostly the Iron Mountain lookout area. They leave the high country pretty fast after the 1st snow
Saw my 1st wolf ever up there

Used to be one of the best tags to have but that was 10+ years, ago another unit Idaho Fish & NO Game has managed into the Dirt !! I would start looking for Tag soup recipes if your holding out for a 180" or better buck !! There are some decent bucks in there but with 1/2 the unit being private and 225 other people animals get pushed out quick ... Good luck

I've spent a bit of time there and have had a heck of good time at the end of the season when the bucks are coming down and everyone is gone. But you sound like the expert here....

We have an elk tag for 44 starting Oct 15. Love to hear how you guys do and if you see any bulls worth looking for. Good luck!

I've done the 44 elk tag twice now. Always towards the end and I saw next to no deer while looking for elk. Because of that I wouldn't even put in for 44 deer but maybe these other guys are right end of the season isn't the best choice.

It depends where you are in the unit, if your on the west side the Deer will migrate in one day, but where they hold up before they migrate is the real secret. The East side the Bucks and Does will migrate slowly unless there is a lot of snow and Outdoor Dan is right, the bigger Bucks tend to be killed at the end of the season now days. The archery hunters should kill a good buck or two. 180 Buck is a giant now days, A 320 Bull is a good Bull now days. You should see a lot of game but this is nothing compared to the old days. This is what opportunity hunting does, you will need a side by side or 4 wheeler, come on up to Bellevue to Carl Malones he’s got every machine available for sale

My first time hunting this unit. Hunting late October. Any recommendations would be welcome. Staying out of Fairfield

Not big on posting pictures but good on asking for advice and intel. Good Talk.
