Idaho elk Lemhi or McCall

I'm going to hunt elk in Idaho with my brothers for the first time this year. We have it narrowed down to either the Lemhi or the McCall zones. I was wondering how much of a impact the wolves have had both of them. I also wanted to know what the country is like. We are planning on doing some packing in but also setting up camp of one of the roads for 10 days. Anybody with any info? Thanks Wapato.

i live in the mccall zone. the wolves are bad. i called one in 2 years ago to 11 yards. the rifle hunt here is pretty crowded, especally the first 2 weeks of the season. the bow is less crowded but there is still pressure. i wouldnt concider it a great hunt. if i didnt live here i probably wouldnt hunt here locally. there is elk here its definity not an easy hunt anymore because of the wolves. the country is mostly burnt lodgepole and engleman spruce . some fairly big mountains, allot of roadless country. i have been to the lemhis antelope hunting . it allot more open country . and the rifle is mostly controlled. i would guess they have a bad wolf problem also , like the rest if the idaho-montana-wyoming elk habitat.

I believe Lemhi is a draw hunt? OTC for bowhunting. I do know some people that have hunted Lemhi Archery, and have heard it is pretty good. My mother and step-father ride (horses) there quite a bit and have always said to me that they see elk and lots of sign. If you can't draw a rifle tag, you can hunt McCall instead. Just an idea. Or hunt the Lemhi Archery.

We will be hunting archery in September. I've heard some good reports of Elk Lake in the McCall and I will be looking at some maps of the area. Thanks for the info Wapato.

Wapato,

I bear hunted last spring up by Elk City and had problems with wolves on the baits - I guess it's not that close to McCall.

If you hunt Lemhi send me a PM, I bow hunted the area years ago and can offer some old hunting reports.
